The best analogy I've heard in a while for those of us who like to know why things work in the golf swing:
"Do you have to be a mechanic to drive a car? No. You just press the pedals and turn the wheel. Therefore, you do not have to understand why the golf swing works. Just do what I tell you, and enjoy the results!"

Fine as long as nothing goes wrong. But what if your car starts constantly pulling hard to the left? You can either fight it by constantly applying pressure on the wheel to keep the car going straight for the rest of the cars life or you can go to a mechanic and get the car fixed or you can know enough mechanics yourself to see that the left front tire is low on air and easily fix it yourself on the spot.

i agree with lowpost that there are some pro golfers that are car drivers and play not knowing really the whys and weres and there are other pros like trevino and hogan the can strip there swing down and rebuild it there selfs, they are two of the best mechanic of golf.

The issue is how did these professionals learn their swing, by mechanics or twatting.

Now the car analogy is a good one, experienced drivers can drive a car without much mechanical thought, but can you remember what it was like when you first tried it, "How can you steer, press the clutch, accelerator and move the gear stick all at the same time"

Would you put someone in a car and say "here is the seat, work out the rest yourself" No! you take lessons with either a qualified instructor or if you really want a hard time with a friend or family member who will instruct you in the fundamental principles, you then carry on learning with experience.

I wish you could though.

My lad just failed for the second time yesterday I can cope with the temper tantrum but that's more lessons to pay for out of the Robin exchequer when I could be spending the money on golf instead.

Just think bdbl, once he does get it, that first time he comes to pick you up from the club after a round......
