people talk of left hand controled right hand controlled. Imagine a big car with VERY heavy doors. now go stand by the drivers side car door and open the heavy door. take your golf stance and have the door right next to the rear of the hands, the back of the right hand is touching the door. what you are going to do here is close the door with your backswing. But the thing is you can only use ONE of your hands to do it. Would you close it with the back of your right hand or the heal pad of the left, in a golf stance which would give you more power to close the door? Now you are going to swich sides of the car and close the door with your forward swing, which hand woudl you use?

in tennis a forehand is more powerfull and easier to control then a backhand, but a golf swing is different

    Re: a thought

I have not been a tennis player but I have been a competitive squash player when wearing a younger mans clothes. In squash I would always prefer to play a backhand shot, I would try and manoeuvre the game onto my backhand. This was because I had more control when hitting away from my body, my right arm was not trapped behind it and could swing through in a nice wide arc. Although I could generate more power on a front hand stroke I would loose accuracy.

I feel much the same in the golf swing(although with the left arm), if I turn up the power with my right arm I can overpower my left, losing control and feel in the shot.

    Just an observation.

there is always the 1% exception and I guess you are the one who would hit everything backhand, would you close the car doors backhand too? Look at most tennis pros and they hit much stronger forehand, same with ping pong. and if you do turn the power on with your right hand and it messes up your swing is that because A. it was just too strong and not ideal, or B. that because it was done incorrectly it messed up the swing. Hogan said he wished he had three right hands, some will say that is because he was left handed and whether or not he was left handed is debated by many. But after hitting as many balls as he did I dont beleive, even if he was left handed, that his right did not gain the strength to match his left. Tiger said in his book that left is for control, right is for speed. The left hand does control a lot but the right hand steers the club to the target/ball

In my experience most squash players prefer to play the backhand shot, it's not like tennis and ping pong, like golf you are facing 90 degrees to the target and as I said although the fore hand is stronger it does not have the same touch and control in the game.

Neil, Our drivers door is the on other side (just joking honestly) . Of course I prefer to push with the inside palm of my hands than the outsides. 1) it does not hurt the tendons on the back of the hand 2) It has the weight of my body behind it.

Hey Neil! Lighten up, I am not trying to be obstructive, you asked the questions.

well that is the problem with the web, words can come out different then how you mean them, typing has not expression other then a couple of smileys My post was meant to be light and just discussing further. In tennis I think it was agasi who prefered a two handed backhand, the 1% I mentioned was not sarcastic or any type of stab at you. Like in life look at george burns, he lived to be how old while drinking and smoking cigars every day? he is that 1% that it seemed to not effect negatively.

            interesting thread, shootin.

As a former tennis player, my backhand was a two handed one - in which I would grab the handle of the racket with both hands (10-finger grip), I'd find this to be very succesful. Sometimes, just for fun, I would put two hands on the racket for forehands as well, I'd get even more power and accuracy.

The only thing I can think about how my grip of a tennis racket would be related to the golf club would be the grip - one of the reasons why I've contemplated switching to the 10-finger grip.

Scratch that on the 10-finger grip change...worked TERRIBLY. Had no control whatsoever.

                    Shootin4par,

In tennis you only need to blast the ball with power to specific area that is only 40 yards away. Hitting with power to blow it by your opponent is more desirable in this case and the ball will not stray that much since it only has a short distance to travel. However in Golf , you have to play with both hands and try to power drive to an area 210 to 310 yards away, therefore both left and right side has to work in harmony. There has to be a compromise between power and accuracy in golf.

Do you want to hit the ball 15 yard longer on your drive but loose accuracy or do you want to hit 15 yards shorter, but with better consistency ? So ... for righthander .. do I try to create more distance using the hand speed power on my right hand and time it perfectly at the moment of impact ? ... or do I just let the shoulder mainly pull my left arm into impact for a good blend of power and accuracy ?

That question is for each individual to decide .. I guess

                        Speak for yourself, liar.
You take a lot for granted accusing someone who disagrees with you of having a problem.
Check your addiction with your m.d., he'll help you even if you don't want any help.
