  • Fact or Fiction: Packed courses means higher scores

I was hoping people would use this thread to talk a little about how they keep a rythm when playing on a course thats backed up. I find it hard even with myself being a slow player. How can we all stay mentally focused when having to wait 15 mins to tee off?

Good question. I've never been consistent enough to be thrown off by having to wait - but I have played a couple rounds lately with a couple guys that can't handle it.

I would suspect that I would play chipping games on the tee box.

I don't consider practicing chipping on the next tee box screwing around. First, it's completely allowed under the rules, second, who doesn't need practice?!

As for playing with rookies? On an open course, I'll often ask to play ahead. On a packed course, what difference does it make? You're not going anywhere, anyway.

              Hmmm...

Addressing the subject of the original post.....

"Fact or Fiction - Packed courses means higher scores"

Well a packed course means more golfers on course, so it follows, that more strokes will be taken and therefore the days tally would be higher...

              QED......

              Cheers

Heh ... scragger ... doing the maths

But yeah - a packed course and more waiting usually destroys my score. If not through lack of rhythm, then surely through additional tiring and lack of concentration as the round progress.

Worst thing though, is when slow players hold up the game when the course is clear AHEAD of them.

But why does this make us play worse. Is it because we get aggrevated at the other golfers game which in turn gets us out of rythm? Its one thing to have one bad shot ruin your game. Can another players bad shot also ruin your game? lol Maybe we should all do yoga on the tee box while we wait to realign our ghee...

Yeah - or play in some Zen-like trance

But sure ... if my game is held up because other players, be it ahead of my group or even IN my group, plays bad, that will affect my focus and concentration, and that will in turn affect my game.

Even worse, in competetive situations, my game can get ruined by other players in my group playing WELL. How annoying is that??

And all because it results in me thinking about other things than MY game.

I find that having a completely consistent setup routine helps. It makes it easier to "step into" the game again after being "out" while waiting, searching for balls or similar.

                        You mean chunk, right?

In a one hour lesson, I learned quite a bit - especially about focus.

Perfect example - working on a short chip. I'm focused on a spot 3" in front of the ball. This is where I want to drive my clubhead. Focused on 3" spot... focused on 3" spot... focused on 3" spot... focused on 3" spot... focused on 3" spot... Oh! Look! A golfball! ----------------- Chunk.

Right now, my focus has to be tight to hit a good shot. If I let my mind clear, I still don't hit a good shot.

fact:you need to be relaxed to play good golf.
slow play annoys most people, they get tense or angry , and thats the end of your round , before its even started.
if you know its going to be slow, jovial banter with your playing partners helps relieve tension, just think ' its great to be alive, out in the fresh air playing golf '. just make a day of it!

Have found that the harder I try to concentrate on playing well, the worse I play...

So, I try to actively avoid concious thought about the mechanics of my swing once I'm on course.

It's about going through the routine, settling over the ball and trusting, 100% committing to the fact you've got it right, then pulling the trigger...

                              Cheers
