  • Best Swing Tip Ever

Slow short backswing (some would say 3/4), be aggressive and finish high. Finally took a lesson and the pro who couldnt find much of anything wrong with my swing but suggested I should become more aggressive and finish high. My accuracy, ballstriking and distance has improved with no real changes to my swing.
Give it a try at the range and see how it feels

Yes. That is good advice. I normally take the club back to about parallel, but during one round a few weeks ago I couldnt make good contact to save my life. So, I took shorter 3/4 swings and BAM! I did great the rest of the round.

Catch raindrops with your left hand (if you are right handed) at impact.

I swing better with two hands on the club.

LOL. Sorry guys. What I mean is, I had to learn how to properly rotate and release the club on the downswing. To prevent my flip hook, I used to open or reverse roll my hands and the clubface into impact.

Catch raindrops is just another way of saying, turn the back of my left hand to the ground just prior to impact. This encourages me to let my right wrist roll over the left post impact into a proper finish. Of course this allows me to square the club easily and also promotes holding of the lag longer.

I think the first one is a good one.
For me the raindrops thing is a technical item (rotating the hands through impact) and will only get in the way of a nice swing.

In no other (bar maybe darts & snooker) do we spend so much time figuring out how to do something that our bodies could do if we just let them.

When I was a kid I could hit a golf ball with any old swing and it would be pretty much ok. Thats because I was focussed on hitting the golf ball, not rotating this or sliding that, just hitting the damn ball.

I have never taught myself how to swing a hammer.
I was taught how to hold one and when to use the different types but never how to swing one.

If we can walk up and down a stairs without analying each movement then surely we can hit a golf ball without all the analysis?

Now! let me think back to those early hammer days? Can I have a go at that Dad? Sure Son, here's the hammer. Crack, Yahooooo, that hurt Dad, I hit my thumb! OK Son, keep your eye on the nail and not the hammer. Crack, Crack, that's better dad but I have bent the nail? That's because you are hitting it too hard, use nice steady strokes. OK Dad that's got it!

Now that came with it's problems and I think I can remember hitting a few more thumbs and fingers over the years.

Now! Lets consider a little old golf ball sat on the ground, we will take a 4 foot golf club with a tiny sweet spot, swing it at 100 MPH in a 7 foot arc manipulated by a complex number of pivoting joints that is rotated around a 6 ft rotating trunk that also has a number of bendy bits and strike the ball so well it will fly 180 yards and pull up on a little old patch of short grass.

Easy really, piece of cake, why are we not all scratch players? Ah! maybe it's these bloody coaches making it sound difficult! Hmmm! (pauses for consideration) I could make a lot of money from this "Come on in Mr Smith, so you want to play golf? OK put a ball down there, grab this one iron, now give it a good twatting up the fairway" That's the way, now go away and practice that" "Oh! Fifty pounds please, you won't need to come back (Wry smile appears)"

How many times did you fall over when you were learning to walk or ride a bike?
how many times since then(when sober!) do you need to think about how to walk or ride a bike?

                        Hi Gree,

Well, I guess walking is ingrained in our DNA, a bit like breathing and sleeping, they have evolved. Mind! riding a bike has not been around that long but other than balance (which has been) it's quite straight forward, bit like walking sitting down.

The golf swing does tend to improve with time and practice but must be one of the most complex series of actions the human can simultaneously perform, and, it works against our instincts in many ways, it uses opposites to our initial natural comprehension.

I guess in a million or so years when evolution gets it ingrained into our genealogical fingerprints it will be so natural.

Surely walking is a skill that is learned, otherwise babies could walk straightaway?
I dont believe that you can pass learned behaviours down in DNA.

Think about the steps involved in starting out on a bicycle.
How do you stop the bike form falling over before you get some forward momentum? Well you turn the handle a bit to balance. Whats balance? Hjow does turning the handle give you balance?
If it was easy they could get a robot to do it.
They can barely create robots to walk up and down stairs and they still fall over a lot.
They can sure create robots to beat the hell out of a golf ball though...

                            Hi Shoots!

How is the weather down there? warming up nicely I bet! It's getting nice and spring like up here in limeyland now.

Now! The ball does not care what the body is doing, it only cares about how the club face contacts it and reacts to that contact. So! look and see what the ball is doing, that will tell you what the clubface is doing and if you don't like what it does then use your body to make it do something different.

Hmmm! this is getting interesting Gree. Now then, If a human child was left on it's own with no human contact would it stand up and walk when it was strong enough, would it crawl around on all fours all it's life? I would suggest it would stand up and walk, it does not walk when born as it is too weak and does not need to be taught to do it. Many animals do walk at birth , why? because they will get eaten by other animals if they don't, their parents don't teach them that, they just do it, they have evolved to do it.

Now the robots, yes you can make a robot to hit a golf ball, their structure has been designed only for that purpose, their mechanics are much simpler than the humans. They would struggle to hit a ball out of a bunker, a bush, the rough, up a hill, down a hill, etc etc and they would have hell of a time on a bike .
