  • 3 wood issues.

I can hit all my clubs pretty good except my fairway woods off the deck.
I mostly have trouble with good contact.
I noticed the other day while trying to figure out my probs that if I open my front foot pretty far i was smokin my three wood.
Why is this ? What did this change?

    Thanks.

    Re: 3 wood issues.

I suspect what changed with your foor position was your release through the ball. It's tempting to try to sweep a three-wood off the deck, which actually requires a high degree of precision for regular contact, particuarly if you're giving it both barrels.

For consistency, treat the fairway wood the same as a long iron - strike the ball with a slightly downward path - certainly works for me, resulting in low, boring shots (and greater consistency).

Opening your front foot will help you rotate your hips faster. That can do many different things for your swing, mostly help you attack from the inside and transfer your weight to the left side. Could be flatting your swing a bit as well.

I flare my front foot slightly more than my rear foot.

I actually take a tiny divot with my 3 wood. If you try to LIFT the ball, you are in for trouble. Let the loft of the club do the work.

I agree with OldWease, play it more like a 3 iron. If its too far front, you could be catching the turf before the ball.
