Re: IMPACT Position / Right Hand Drill

    What a wonderful thread!

Great to see RandomHero's success. It's such a sweet feeling when you've been searching for something for ages then suddenly it hits you. Like sitting in a bath and the water level rises!

So much rotation power is killed by the right shoulder moving out instead of down. Especially if the right shoulder goes out and a player is still trying to drop the hands inside. Say goodbye to lag and hello to thins, tops and shanks. Well done Randomhero.

Tis a beautiful day in the UK today. Only 2 hours til I finish work and I'm off to the range for the afternoon. Inspirational stuff!

Hope you hit them well! Thanks for the wonderful reply.

Now its a matter of tempo. I still feel this urge to rush from the top. Its hard to control. When I just relax and swing smooth I hit it perfect. I mean, PERFECT. Dead straight with a penetrating ball flight. This includes my driver.

      Thanks again!

Just noticed your avatar picture, that shows a great impact position with the right shoulder dropping through the rotation of the upper pivot point.

That right shoulder down is a nice swing thought. I tried it as much as possible in my round this past weekend. There were several times that I forgot because I usually don't think about swing mechanics. So, to make a long story short I played better than usual. I shot an 85 with two birdies back-to-back. I kind of fell apart on the 16th and had a triple boggie on a 4-par. So now I have to work on the right shoulder down for several weeks to get to where I don't have to think about it.
Thanks for this insight to the golf swing.

Glad to hear someone else having success. Over the last week I have hit my irons...ALL OF MY IRONS...better than I ever have. Shot 76 the other day. 5 bogeys, 1 birdie, no double or more bogeys. Playing again this weekend and REALLY looking forward to it!

Played this past Sunday and used the right shoulder down swing thought. I have to make a conscious effort to do it however. I have not had time to practice the move but will try to get in some practice time. To make a long story short I did score a 42 on the front nine, had a par on 10 & 11 then the rain, thunder and lightning hit. We had to run for cover and decided that the weather was not going to improve. Needless to say I was disappointed that we did not finish the round but I was real encouraged with my play. I am playing nine holes this evening after work. I am looking forward to it.
              Cheers,

Awesome! I shot 75 this past Sunday. Only little extra I needed was a bit of a setup change and wider backswing, and I was set. Hit the ball VERY well. Couldn't make putts of 10 feet, but made a lot of pars

Random, it seems you are playing very well, what is your hcap?

I tell you what, I have not been playing much at all lately, but when I do I am hitting 10-13 greens per and making no putts. So my hcap is not improving even though I am hitting the ball better than ever.

                  Be good.

Re: IMPACT Position / Right Hand Drill

Something interesting my son said to me. He was watching some baseball show and they explaining how good hitters do not extend the arms at impact, but turn and keep the righ elbow connected to the body at impact. Arms extended at impact is a weak position. The arms extend After impact. The thing I noticed was, and this maybe very obvious but wasn't to me, was that at impact ( look at Greg Willis impact drill) the right elbow is bent and BELOW the left elbow (for right handed). It seems the only way to get into this position is by turning the hips with the right elbow connected to the right hip. Also when the right elbow is ABOVE the left at impact, I think this is more of an over the top move. Just wondered what other thought

Yes, the game is coming together better than I ever expected. I am currently a 5. Last 2 rounds dropped me down from a 6. If I work on my putting, I bet I could drop another 2-3 strokes. When I make a bogey, I have a hard time making it up. Pros shoot 67 and have 2-3 bogeys!!!

I have got so much better in the last 2 years because of 3 things....

                      1) WORKING on my swing -Applying what I learn and not giving up.
                      2) 3 to 4 lessons each year for the last 2 years - Got a great pro in Paul Viola who will even drop me some advise when I am not paying!
                      3) This website - Guys like yourself, Greg, shootin, cmays, BrianW, msklar92, golfseeker, all the "owners" for keeping it going. I am sure there are so many more I would thank. This site has given me SO much info and SO many ways to look at it. Just like the whole "right shoulder down" thought. I must have read Greg's RHD 10 times, then finally, and I wish I could remember what post put it in a different verbage, it just "clicked" and I got it. There has been SO much I have learned from this site, and I thank the whole community for it!

                      Thanks JB

For awhile, the "key" to my swing was keeping my right elbow pointing at my right hip. Never behind. That whole "the top of your backswing should look like you are holding a serving tray full of plates." Now, after practice, its very natural.

IMO, if you extend PRIOR to impact, you are casting.

As for right elbow ABOVE the left, that would have to be over-the-top move. Your right shoulder would be level with your left at impact. The only way to get to that position, right elbow above left at impact, is to turn your shoulders OUT instead of DOWN. Might be easier to picture if you stand up and try it

92... I think you make some great points.

The swing should reach it's maximum speed a little after impact, this will ensure you are accelerating the club face as you strike the ball. To achieve this your left arm will be straight and the right arm will be pushing through and not yet fully extended as the ball is struck. Both arms should be fully extended at the quarter follow through position (halfway between impact and horizontal)

When its a full swing shot, I always make sure I have completed my follow through. When I stop rotating, whether its my hips or shoulders, I dont "finish" the swing. And IMO, stopping my rotation is my biggest flaw (comes out more with my short irons and I hit pulls).

It all goes back to tempo and having a fluid swing.
