New Course Suggestions...

I joined a golf league this spring and will be playing at a new course for the first time this afternoon.

It got me thinking about how people approach a new course...any thoughts or tips on playing somewhere you've never been before?

I've seen the layout on the course website and was able to get a few tips from the site but otherwise, I'm just winging it. I plan to go slow and try to just have fun with it...of course I'll also take notes for things I want to consider when I play future rounds there.

Does anyone have other thoughts on playing a new course?

Stay safe. Keep the ball in play. Middle of fairways and greens, unless a safer course of action is obvious. Take enough club. Heed the yardage and don’t try to kill the ball.....new courses sometimes look longer than they are. As this is league, maybe more importantly, take in the course and pay attention for the next time you play it.

I travel for 9 months out of the year, and I get to play alot of courses that are new to me.

Study the score card. Note problems, and/or hazards as needed. Try to never hit a ball into a landing area that you can't see, unless you know for sure there are no problems waiting for your ball. If you have a lot of confidence in your short game, and a high percentage of up, and downs, then lay ups will help avoid problems, and help you score better.

Above all have alot patience with your game while playing on unknown surroudings. GJS

Thanks for your thoughts. I played the new course yesterday and it went ok...not great but not terrible. I kept the ball in play and took notes for
next time. It was fairly hilly with several blind shots so I mostly just played it safe.
