Just saw Golf Digest's "Stack & Tilt" with Aaron Baddeley. Has anyone tried this new swing out? If you want to read it check this out:

    Re: Stack & Tilt

when you make a stack of pancakes they need to be straight up with no tilt. If they tilt a little to one side then when you carry them and they sway you run the risk of the stack falling over. Personally I am in favor of stack but no tilt, unless it is a short stack then the tilt does not matter so much. Just my .02

I tried it, and hit it great. Had a tenancy to go left...but that's easy to fix. Otherwise, it is an interesting swing. You stay right over the ball the whole time.

Did you try it with driver?

            Re: Stack & Tilt

I have been using a stay centered over the ball method for many years and it works great with irons, I get a ball first strike with great results. I like to have my hands ahead.
With driver one has to move the ball forward a little more than normal because its harder to pivot behind when there is little movement off the ball.
I would be very interested in what you think with driver and would welcome your opinion as to set up changes you needed.

I suspect the ball position would be close the same as I do now, on the forward heal. The S&T swing would stay the same in respect to the "center" of my swing, I would just now have the ball foward.

                Re: Stack & Tilt

I have been keeping most of my weight on my forward foot for all my full swings since I started golfing back in the early 1950s. Don't know much about the rest of the stack and tilt moves in the article, but the weight forward issue has been around for a long time. Back then the reasoning was the same as they explain in the article. That being a consistant ball position, in relation to the swing, that helps with crispy clean ball striking. GJS

I don't doubt there is some substance, I would not suggest most club handicap players try it though. It seems to me that it is something else to confuse them with.

                    Re: Stack & Tilt

My only point is simple, when one uses long shafted clubs especially driver, one needs to move the ball forward a tad or get more pivot. I like the skipping stones analogy for the downswing, that's what it feels like for me.
Some newbies may take this stack and tilt to a fault; with driver and long shafted clubs, ball position becomes paramount.
My only point-I like to keep it simple; much easier to digest.

                      Re: Stack & Tilt

Hi, I've just started playing golf after a 17 year layoff. Played field hockey (still do) since i was 11. Started back at the golf 2 weeks ago and had the most wicked slice with my woods that you will ever see. Played three rounds lost 8 balls....
Spotted the stack & tilt method of golf swing and noticed how similar it was to my iron swing witch I can hit great. Tried last night at the range with the s&a using a 5 iron and got more flight, distance etc...
Took same position for driver as normal (inside left heel) and hit 60 balls using the s&a swing.
My god it was fantasic, yeah I hit a few, and i mean a few hooks and slices, but the ball would not have ended up in the trees unles the fairway was really tight.
                      This swing method is great.

                        Re: Stack & Tilt

My swing has been quite erratic this year (my second year of golf). I've hit well about 2/10 shots and even those haven't really gone where I wanted them to.
Since my swing was so misserable I thought I had nothing to loose by testing the stack & tilt swing. I read through the golfdigest 'Try it yourself'-section a few times and then went outside and took some practice swings. Felt a bit weird but still ok.
I went to the range to try it out. After the first balls I was like "meh.. this isn't really working" but then suddenly I hit the ball better than ever before.

At the end of the session (just 120 balls) I hit about 2/3 of the shots totally straight and further than before, and like djmailey wrote above those that didn't go straight would propably have stayed on the fairway.

I'm totally in love with this swing method.

                          Re: Stack & Tilt

This is the swing for me. My drives are just straight and increased distance. True, you must move the ball a little forward that usual. Irons are also great. The only problem I have been having is a little pulling once in awhile with my irons (mostly my longer irons). Does anyone know the posible reason for this, and how to correct it?

I agree with you Brian, I tried it and had success with short and mid irons, but as soon as I moved to my long irons and woods, I sprayed them all over the place and did not get the distance. I believe that if one has the time and money to spend the many hours required, you could get quiet proficient at it, but why learn a new swing? try it as I did, if it comes to you without too much effort, good enough, but if not, you have to ask the question, do you want to start all over learning a new swing.
