  • Shaft/swing change?

Here goes. Im a 14 handicap and im turning 16. I currently have a Cobra speed Driver with a Regular flex Alida shaft, but have started to hit a slice with it. When I went to my home course I tried a Taylormade r7 driver with a stiff shaft and hit it beautifully, and even with the slightiest draw. I was just wanted to know if it was the shaft or if i just had a glitch in my swing. Thanks for the help.

    Re: Shaft/swing change?

So many variables with shafts it's so hard to nail down unless you try all sorts of clubs with all sorts of brands. Incredibly, there isn't an industry standrad for stiff/reg flex, so Callaways stiff flex may be stiffer than Titleist. Stupid eh?!

Without wishing to sound like your Dad, turning into your mid teens sees the start of a lot of build up of muscle strength. You may have quickened your tempo/speed without realizing. The general rule of thumb, I believe, is the quicker the swing, the stiffer the shaft should be.

Go play down a range that lets you try all sorts of clubs and find out!

I highly recommend that you go to a swing analysis lab and test different shafts, lofts, etc. It really makes a huge difference in reducing backspin and maximizing distance or carry. In almost every city, Callaway, TaylorMade, and others have swing centers.
