    Re: Intents and purpose

Thanks for the comments much appreciated. The notion that you “hit down on the ball” isn’t as straightforward as it appears. How steep should your swing be? I think, my swing, at present, is too steep. If I were taught just to make sure that I hit the golf ball just prior to my swing bottoming out, then I would have been much better off. I was watching the Swing Vision videos and I thought, damn my swing is much steeper than that, and indeed, my divots, at time are too deep. I wanted to pass the idea through you folks first just to ensure that I wasn’t introducing new problem into my swing.

The further you move the ball to the left the more sweeping action you will have. You will have loft. Some great players would have a sweeping action. Jack Nicklaus had some of the highest loft on tour, he played off of the inside of the left heel. Even in a sweeping action there is some downward action.

We also know the further to the right the clubface will remain open unless we have a closed clubface on the way down or the stronger grip which is one in the same. Now you have also decresed loft of the club.

        Re: Intents and purpose

I may be the last person who should be commenting on this but... I always thought the steepness of the swing should be determined by the length of the club. The shorter the club, the tighter the radius, and the steeper the swing. That being so, there's nothing to "do" except swing the club. I think many of us have a swing that's "too steep" because we bend our arms and contract it.

Mr. Cmays, for one, has to tiptoe around and apologize ahead of time if he wants to explain something deeper than third grade level.

I realize that Nicklaus, amongst others, is an advocate of your opinions on ball position. Other top professionals and instructors are not. I can read canned generic golf instruction from a hundred sources, with much of it contradicting each other, but I prefer to teach and learn through understanding and analysis. Is it necessary to squelch all discussion that goes beyond "golf magazine" simplification and generalization?

If I have misunderstood your comments or your intention, I sincerely apologize.
You certainly have and your apology is accepted.

I merely pointed out that in my opinion your comment was introducing some overly advanced concepts into a request for assistance that would cause confusion to the postie. You then proceeded to suggest that I was not capable of comprehending the subject, I considered your response rather immature as I do with your latest statement.

Mr Cmays is a big boy and does not need you to intervene, he is more than capable of standing his own corner where necessary. Also, if many of my beliefs coincide with those of Nicklaus, Hogan, Jones etc then I am honoured by it.

Neutral corners, guys ... we're all here to feed off each other, right? It's called synergy, and surely it's what GTO is all about.

I, for one, thoroughly enjoy the fact that different members explain things in different ways, however complex or simple.

My local PGA Pro is of the opinion, that placing the ball anywhere further back than center of your stance is a cardinal sin that induces out-to-in swinging along with the steep angle of attack.
He prefers the Hogan way of thinking about ball position, where the ball is static in relation to the left heel (right for lefties) and only the right foot position changes - be it to widen or narrow the stance, or to open and close the stance.

              Read my post.
Also, cmays: I suspect there are other reasons you are not going to be in the hall of fame, can you think of a few?
KBP, is mommy aware that you are posting on the big boys channel?

You know, some of us get a buzz out of helping people but others have an impulse to feed an over-active ego.

                  keep it simple!

Golfone: I am not trying to give you a hard time, just keepin em honest. If any of us had a chance of hitting the big time we would have done it. You and I and others did not have a chance so just admit it, we were not good enough. We were good, sometimes very good but not good enough.
Perhaps unlike you, I am content with playing 1,2,3 over par with a few below that on good days. I just enjoy the companionship, competition and watching other young hopefuls.
My ego needs no further enhancement, it has had over 60 years of that and at times it gets smothering and all that.
My purpose on this db is to voice my opinion and style about this game and yes at times I have been obnoxious and for that I am sorry. But lord knows we all love this game and want to see others enjoy it too.
Not sure where you all live but I live in America where we have free speech and freedom. My way is not always your way but it works and you can take it or leave it or take some and leave the rest.
Do I miss the days of US Open and US Senior Open qualifiers, yes but I am a better player for having gone through those times.
                    Good play to all.
