  • Proper warm-up regime

    I've never had one, and therefore when I tweaked a muscle underneath my left shoulder blade on my second shot at the range recently, I knew I only had myself to blame, and this was porpbably one of the most important and pressing things I need to sort out at the moment.

    Can any one suggest or point me at a list of what I should be doing and for how long? Cheers all

    I use a simular version as the above link discribes. The link above is also printer friendly. I also do my golf exercise routine even on my non golfing days. If you are ever traveling in the USA, and you see an old guy exercising with a golf club at rest area, that might be me.

    When I warm up with my clubs, I start out with wedges, and graduate to my driver. Also with shorter to longer swings with each club. Before I get to my driver, i throw in some putting, especially if the practice green actually represents what I am going to find on the course. I alway finish up my pre game warm up with what ever club I going to use off the first tee. I can't see the advantage of finishing up with a wedge, then walking to the tee box to hit a driver.

    I also pulled a muscle under my right shoulder blade about 7 years ago. What a long term chore that was to get rid of. almost 8 months of PT. I still blame the weighted club I recieved for Christmas for that problem. I am firm believer now to get to the course early, so as to have enough time to properly warm up prior to that first tee. It takes me about 20 minutes to properly warm up, and even longer on cooler, winter days. GJS

      At the range (and courses with ranges for pregame warmup), I've stolen a part of the warmup that my coach uses.

      I grab a 7 iron, and try to hit it 100 yards. Then 110, 120, 130, 140, 150 and finally 160.

      At my home course (no range), I like to show up, walk on the cement blocks that denote parking spaces for 3 or 4 minutes (holding my balance), then I put on my golf shoes, and do the 7 iron drill into the net. Then it's time for chips and putts to get some feel.

      The cement block thing is to activate my sense of balance and response so that it's ready to help me sense being balanced in my address position.

          Have always found that either a double espresso or a double shot of scotch warms me up quite sufficiently for my winter rounds...

            Well Bulldog,

            About an hour and a half before I tee off I take my anti-inflam. tablet.

            I get to the course and chip some balls and putt. I do some stretches of the back, shoulders and legs. I take some practice swings (full swing).

            Just before I tee off I take a couple of panadeine forte.
