  • Grip change?

I went for a video lesson yesterday. I was hitting the ball quite well over the camera. The instructor wanted me to change my grip. My left hand was showing 2 knuckles but my right hand was only showing one. He wanted me to show 2 knuckles on both hands. This small change meant that I could not hit the ball at all! Although at first the instructor said that I had a good swing, when I was trying the new grip he then wanted to change it saying it was too flat! The question is :- would I be best to persevere with the new grip and eventually become a better player (perhaps)? Or continue with my old grip? Also is my original grip weak or strong? Any help most welcome.

    Re: Grip change?

Two knuckles of each hands seems weak to me, but I haven't seen your swing or grip, so it is hard to say. He may be trying to change some aspect of your swing. Many people don't appreciate just how much a grip change can change your swing. In general, and this is very general, a stronger grip flattens out your swing and a weaker grips makes it more upright. Many people falsely think the left hand to be the most important, when it is actually it is the right hand that needs the attention. The right hand has more potentual to screw up a swing then almost any other aspect of your setup. There are only a few factors that need to be considered, the hands need to return the clubface square at impact, they need to be secure enough to absorb the impact yet supple enough to allow movement, they need to allow the wrists to hinge properly and thats it!!! Has a general rule, you do not want the hands to fight each other, which means if one hand is trying to open the face and the other trying to close it, not good.

I agree with gonavy. Sight unseen, it seems really weak. Were you hooking it?

I was hooking it with 2 knuckles on left and one on right hand. Is that weak? Now with 2 on both hands, i can't hit it at all!!

          Try slowing down your swing.

I recently changed my grip with my driver to three knuckles on the left and three on the right basically shifting my right hand to the left around the grip. Now my left hand is on top of the grip. I am hitting it straighter, got rid of slice, but occasionally I do pull left if I get ahead of myself on the downswing.

Don;t know if this is a good practice but my shots are straight with driver.
