I was looking at this video, Video: Swing Instead Of Hit (Sports & Fitness: Golf), and others at the same site, and I was intrigued by the suggestion to breathe out throughout the swing, to avoid tensing up and hitting at the ball, instead of swinging through it. I haven't tried this yet, but I thought I'd share it.

Re: Breathing out during swing
There may be something in all of this. Having done karate, I can confirm that the most powerful strike is accompanied by simultaneously breathing out. It's interesting that when a lot of people are looking to do something powerfully, they actually hold their breath! Not good folks.....
I'm not sure how I breathe (or even if I breathe!) during the golf swing, but I shall take note in future. I suppose, at the very least, the rhythm of breathing shouldn't change just because we're swinging a stick (but I bet it does for most people).

Re: Breathing out during swing
Maybe thats why "The Hammer" Jack Hamm yells while striking the ball.
Its similiar to Bruce Lees scream as hes giving someone a roundhouse to the cranium. Its a way of releasing air.
I dont actually know if im holding my breath or not during my swing. My swing is so slow I could possibly sufficate before I finished my follow thru.

Re: Breathing out during swing
The same thing applies to other sports; for example tennis, with top players clearly 'grunting' at the point of impact. It signifies the concentration of energy at a specific point, i.e. the point of contact (which is why you're trained to do that in karate). May also help timing but, isn't that what we want as part of the golf swing?
So, let's start raising the noise levels out there!
