  • Hitting it a bit heavy

I am finding my irons are solid, but looking at the contact and divots, I'm not getting optimal results. I find the flight is almost always straight, but I'm seeing a deeper divot than I want. The divot is after the ball (I place a tee on the ground at the range to measure this), but instead of the 'ol dollar bill, it's more like a wallet. It's costing me 10-20 yards, I'm sure.

I'm hoping someone can help because I think if I can rectify this, I'll get that consistent crisp contact I've been looking for.

    Thanks.

As you posted your divot is after the ball, and the ball flight is almost always straight. So, the ball is gone before the deep divot, which is probably restricting your swing follow through after impact. That, or maybe you are creating so much back spin that you are not getting any roll after your carry. What is your ball flight?

If I had that problem, the first thing I would try would be to try and flatten out my swing a little. Then again some days I wish I had this problem. I can deal with the loss of distance, as long as my divots are in the right place.

Some of the instructors on this site, I am sure, will give you more information. Off hand I'd guess you have too steep of a down swing angle. GJS

Yes, I am definately a 2 plane swinger. I know my tendancy is to swing too steep. I wish I had a way to flatten out the swing without causing other issues.

" Also in a upright swing, if you roll the hands in the follow through your divot will not be as steep."

I am working on maintaining the right wrist angle into impact. I don't have that down to the point where I can release it after contact and then roll the hands, I don't think.

I agree with what has been suggested so far, the ball will have gone before you feel it or before the club strikes the ground.

Your divots will be deep due to either a steep swingpath or the hub of the swing being too low. Imagine your swingpath as a round dish (I know its not exactly round but for the exercise) if it is inclined on a plane then as the plane gets steeper the bottom point will be lower. If the plane stays the same but the centre hub lowers the bottom of the arc will also become lower.

The tip from Cmays to use impact tape or spray is good. You did not mention ball flight but I would suspect it is high and weak, if this is the case you will find contact is made high up on the clubface, this will be due to your steep angle of contact. You will need to make contact more in the centre of the face by lowering your swingplane. Stand a little more upright in your stance and maybe a little further away from the ball.
