Anyone got any tips or quick fixes for the worst shot in golf? Hit a couple last night when I played, haven't hit any for years but very concerned that i'll be plagued by them.

The best tip I can give you to avoid further shanks is to treat it just like any other bad shot. Forget about it, and focus on your next shot. That's all a shank is.....a bad golf shot. We all hit bad golf shots, no matter how low of a number we shoot. You are a 4 handicapper, so you must hit a lot very good shots. Focus on those good ones. The more a golfer frets about his, or her's bad shots, the more those bad shots become bothersome. I am a firm believer that instead of being told how to fix a bad swing issue, a golfer should know what causes a specific bad shot. If you learn, and understand the "why" part of bad shot, your own "fix" will last longer. The swing instructors on here will give you the fixes required to avoid shanking, but I have to tell you a one piece take away, while employing a one piece downswing, starting with the hips, will do wonders in preventing the shanks. Ah! The bloody S***K, don't even want to say it, it's infectious. There is no frustration in life that exceeds hitting five S***KS in succession

There are a number of causes like standing too close to the ball and poor weight distribution. I have found it caused mainly by hitting out to in and cutting across the ball. Try practising swings with something sitting just outside the ball, a headcover, block of wood, another ball etc. Work on hitting the ball without hitting the other object.

Your hitting the ball on at the heel of the club. simply - don't hit it there - hit it on any other part of the face and it won't shank. Usually from an outside to inside swing so that the heel of the face makes first contact with the ball.
