Re: so called "secrets" of Ernest Jones, Crocker, Mike Austin
When I started, I tried to help the ball up. Everybody I know tried to help the ball up. It stems from what they see before they know how it works. They see the ball go up, they want to replicate this, they try to help the ball up. Throwing the club would work but they try to help the ball up so it doesn't work as intended.
The problem is that the purpose (help the ball up) is incorrect.
I think that the correct purpose must be taught before any technique. In effect, proper contact must be taught before anything else. At least then, they know what the purpose is so they can trust the technique to do what it's supposed to. If instead we don't explain how the ball is supposed to go up, they will try to help the ball up even if they learn to throw the club.
I suggest that the correct purpose be to strike the ball downward instead. It could also be to strike the back of the ball or something similar. But what it must be is to strike the ball properly as intended.
The solution is to teach the correct purpose (strike the ball properly) so that the technique can be learned properly as well.
If the correct purpose is not taught, trying to help the ball up will transform the technique to suit the purpose. It will not be the proper technique anymore, it will be some hybrid that is supposed to be "throw the club" but instead it's "throw the club to help the ball up". If the correct purpose is taught, then the technique "throw the club" will become "throw the club to strike the ball downward". The technique will remain correct.
