I am a little inconsistent off the tee. One out of three drives will be a slice. I don't know what I do on the good swings and have had lessons. So many coaches have diffeent ideas on how the backswing starts. Some say drop the left heel, push the left knee, push the knee and drop heel, push the hip, move the hands and right side. What is a learner to do.

Re: How does the backswing start
For me the backswing starts when the club head starts moving back...
How you choose to do that is up to you...
And IMO you shouldn't lose any sleep over each of the different things that need to happen from a physical movement perspective in making it happen...
I humbly suggest you just take the club back on line...
There, backswing started...
Cheers

Re: How does the backswing start
The start of the backswing is probably not the same for everyone. For myself it's sort of a one-piece takeaway... yes, everything at once but this is not for everyone. You need to experiment on the driving range and find out what works for you so as to have a repeatable, reliable swing.
It took me a few years to attain that as I am not a natural nor gifted athlete... And certainly not a foolproof swing... perhaps only 80 percent reliable... But certainly a work in progress...
Tip: A SLOW takeaway is best, especially for most beginners.
