2nd shot woes

anybody got any videos showing correct set up for hybrid or FW shots from the fairway,
poor 2nd shots on longer holes is killing my game

Is that Shaun Wotshis name from the Canadian Golf-thingy Centre?

I like his teaching style very much. He seems to lift his hands at the top of the backswing/two plane swing in a way that seems natural to me (not that that implies success in my swing, you understand...)

i think its more of a mental issue, but its a pisser when you are driving the ball really well and then screw the hole up with a pathetic dribbler of a 2nd shot

Absolutely.

And I'd wager that after a "so so not great but at least I'm in play" drive you can smack the hybrid / utility / rescue / long iron a fair distance to set up a easy pitch / chip on.

What you have to do mate is ignore the fact that the second shot after you've creamed one is going to set up a birdie / eagle putt; just play it on its merits.

Simple eh.

Oh and when you've worked HOW to do it , please let me know!

How about when you hit your tee shot well, miss left with your approach, then manage to take 5 more strokes to hole out?

No short game is my big problem.

i wouldnt hold your breath robin!
i may have to look at a different approach!
other than the par 3's there are gullies the run across the holes maybe i should hit a shorter club off the tee and lay up and that takes the gullies out of the equation

How bout on those par 5's you take all they danger out of play and just hit an 8i or w/e on your second shot to put yourself in a comfortable range for sticking it close...I found doing this will produce more birdies than trying to cream your 3w/hybrid onto the green for eagle

btw if my second shot is more than 240 i hardly ever go for the green in 2 but when i do, i like to use my driver off the deck. I find it to be more consistent than my 3w and i have in fact taken my 3w out of my bag and replaced it with a 2i

Odd that you type this.

I've started trying to apply a different strategy to par 5's. I take the yardage and subtract 150. I divide the remainder in half. I then proceed to hit the same club twice, get to or inside 150 for my 3rd, then usually hit the green and 2 putt. I've put this theory into play 6 times. My net score? Even. 6 pars. Any time I've tried to 'go for it in 2', I haven't scored better than par (but my short game is absolute junk).

A buddy of mine at my home course told me this. (btw he is a 4 handi) He says when playing from the blues or up he only hits his drive maybe 1 time and thats just to shame the people hes playing with...his strategy is to try and hit the 150 marker on every fairway then stick it close from there...this is comming from a very well rounded player that consistently shoots even par and better.
I havent gone to this on every hole b/c i love driving the ball but have started teeing up irons on the holes that have more danger in them and have had great success.
Give it a try..next round just try to hit the 150 marker, or w/e is a comfortable distance for you off every tee box

As long as you can make a drive with what ever to around 220 yards most par 5's will leave you around 330/360 to hit. Two 5/4 irons will get you there (forgetting doglegs at the moment). If you have a shot or two then it should be a a couple of 7 irons and a wedge. leave the two to the green for the Tigers.

thats the mentality i will try to use for now!
but the wife is buggering off to spain next tuesday for a week so ill be putting plenty of practice time in with the long clubs!
