  • Please comment on my swing

I posted this in my blog as well, but the comment system is kinda strange, so I'll put it here as well...

    .

I can see that I'm dropping the club a bit too far down my back at the top of the backswing, but the pull is almost gone, and the slice is DEFINATELY gone, so I'm fairly happy.

Next, I will be working on creating a bit more lag and get more inside on a flatter plane in the downswing.

    Comments welcome.

No, I want to have more lag AND swing in-to-out on a flatter plane to allow room for my hands to release.

I know the type of surface in the video. It is difficult to strike downward on the ball with that surface. The surface is too hard to "give" and the shock from striking downward on the ball on this surface is much greater than on grass. To alleviate this, I used to sweep the ball. It works fine but not when the surface is grass. Since I play on grass, not on a mat, I had to think of a way to practice on the mat with a method I would normally use on grass. I committed myself to striking downward on the ball even on that kind of surface even with the greater shock it produces.

One thing that helped me reduce the shock is to shorten my swing somewhat and apply a bit less force than for a full blown swing. It does reduce the shock I feel on that surface. When I get to play on grass, the shock is gone completely because the grass "gives" and I swing with less force. One good side effect of swinging with less force is the added control I put on the club. Not only am I more accurate, I send the ball farther because of better transfer of momentum from the club to the ball.

Hi Mox, looks a bit wet there, you may well be in the UK with the rain we have been suffering!

To get that flatter plane try extending your arms a little more on the backswing, get them as far as possible from your right hip. Slow down the start of the downsing as you drop the arms into the slot then hit through with the mental image of a horizontal approach into and through the ball.

In saying this you have quite a nice swing with a good balanced address and nice on plane position at the top. A fast tempo but thats ok if it suits you, maybe you could experement with a slightly slower backswing and start of the downswing, then wind on the speed as you get to the release.

          Just my 2 cents.

It looks to me that your hips are still square at impact then they clear and it looks like you cast the club from 9:00 through in stead of holding that angle.....

          Nice swing though

I like it. It does look like the club is too short which I know is not the case but the way you straighten your back and almost stand up on the follow through makes me think that you are uncomfortable staying down on the ball. This also makes you sweep your irons off rather than hitting down on them and then staying down through the follow swing.

I don't like your hips. I would want to see the left hip shift fast away from the target line and the right hip move towards the target line.

You do overswing a little and the swing is upright but you cock your wrists well so I wouldnt be too worried about that.

Id like to see it a bit might "tight" in the hands and not so snatchy.

Re: Please comment on my swing

Thank you all for your comments.

Regarding club length: I too feel that they are too short. I have tested a couple of demo-clubs at 1" long 2deg upright and feel more comfortable with those. My old Wilson clubs were ½" longer than these Mizunos.
I will take this up with my local teaching pro!

Regarding hips: You are all completely right. I don't clear my hips enough, and perhaps as a result, I sometimes come too much around and cast the club from the top, creating a pull.
I'm working on both the hips and the casting at the moment.

Regarding hands: My pro has me keeping my hands closer to each other now than in this video. It seems more "solid" for lack of a better word, but is quite difficult to get used to.

I will try to update this thread with new video as I (hopefully) progress.

I agree - those clubs look very short. Another inch - possibly 2 - and your spine angle will decrease (somewhere in the mid 30's) and it looks like you have quite a bit of knee bend (but I'll defer to swing experts on that).

Longer clubs will have you in a better static position, increasing your ability to make dynamic movements.
