  • Setp for driver and irons

Is the setup the same on normal shots for the driver and irons? I tend to hit a lot of pulls and weak pushes, espically with the drver, and a friend told me on the course the other day that my shoulders are too level at address, and that the right should be lower. I knew this , but let a bad habit creep in. Am I correct on these assumptions?

    1. level shoulders at address cause shoulders to be open, which all but guarantees an outside in swing; thereby, pulls and weak pushes.
    2. Promotes too low of a ball flight as we are hindered from striking the ball an assendng blow.
    3. both cause a power loss.

    1. open shoulders would lead to pulls (face closed to target, square to path), fades (face square to target, open to path) and slices (face open to target, open to path).

    2. I presume you mean driver for ascending blow? Irons need a descending blow. Ball height depends on the effective loft of the club face at impact so open shoulders alone will not alter height, and open face will though.

    3. Level shoulders could cause you to lose power, at address you should have about 60% of your weight on the back foot for driver shots.

I'm still working on this myself (spine tilt at address).

When I don't do it, I get out in front of the ball, and tend to hit weak shots that either push right or leak right (unless I flip my hands in which case I hit a hard, low, screaming hook.)

I'd say your assumptions are pretty good; save the result of #1. You've moved the bottom of the swing arc forward with level shoulders (unless you dip back behind the ball) therefore you still have an inside path option if you simply rotate. However, your brain will let you know that you have to get your arms over-involved to get to the ball, so you could very well respond by getting your hands and arms outside, creating an outside in path.

I largely agree with the rest.
