  • Impact.... I Wish!

Please help I've been having lessons and these have corrected my set up, posture & swing plane faults. My swing looks fairly decent but, in slow motion video i'm clearly breaking down the left wrist through impact , with my right hand working under. I've been known to take monster divots with wedges and when its bad the long clubs go high and right.

I've been trying hard to correct it and i'd play nicely for 7-8 holes then it will creep back in without me knowing or thinking about it. I'd like to hear if anyone has overcome these problems and how. I've now accepted that there is no easy way to overcome this problem and i'm prepared to put serious work into this.

    Thanks

      What Greg said.

You're flippy through impact. Time to start using a push release!

Any time I start hitting skyballs again, it's back to the Secret for another bucket or two of balls.

I use a homemade impact bag as shown in my avatar. The bag is made of demim material and is filled with old rags. If you use such a training aid try it several times to get a feel for it and then work up to at least 25 to 50 times at a session. You will be amazed the feeling you get and you will begin to maintain the bowing out of the left wrist and the hinge in the right wrist. Initially I just think of hitting the bag as hard as I can while rotating my forearms counter-clockwise. The sound of the club hitting the bag will give you instant feed-back if you are doing it correctly. In my avatar I am using a 4 iron but you can use any club.

For our Scottish members I just found this picture I had seen before of a POVO version of the secret, its a kitchen spatula pushed under the watch strap with some tape around the forearm. Wow! bet it rips off the hairs when removing it

It'd effectively work, Brian - ingenious! To think I could have had 'a secret' from the Dollar store for a buck! Oh well.

The other thing to do in the spatula version would be to loop a little tape around the end of the spatula and your palm so that your hand can't get away.

                  Re: Impact.... I Wish!

I remember we discussed this a couple of years ago. I actually think the spatula is better than the "Secret" because it allows you to address the ball normally, without a huge forward press. And it requires you to make and keep the right wrist cup yourself, without the gadget doing it for you. So if you can feel the spatula on the back of your hand, you're doing it right.

How about an elastic band threaded through a slot of the spatula and the other end attached to the index finger. You would get a snapback in the backswing. Cool eh!
