  • An Update On My Swing

    Hey all!

Just wanted to share with you my latest range footage. I'm really pleased with where my swing is going now.

I was swinging with an Ernest Jones style, but have migrated to a slightly more one-plane style now and the results are nothing short of fantastic.

Have a look. Pick it apart. Ask questions. I don't care! I love it!

      Hi Neil,

Great balance and tempo, I like the way your arms stay connected and the overall shape to your swing.

Out of interest how is your short iron game?

          Cheers Bri.

My accuracy is improving greatly the more I get used to the connection you mentioned. (Glad someone noticed it! Been working on that!)

When I'm swinging well my 50 degree wedge carries about 115 with a very slight draw. My set wedge carries 125 and my 56 degree is around 90 yards. I'm starting to be able to pitch and chip with some nip as well to get some check, so picking my spot is becoming easier.

Getting to 9, 8 and 7 iron I am having to hit a a lot of shots and pace the yardage out on the range as the strike I'm getting has screwed up my yardages (in a good way!). I'm hitting 7 iron in the video and they were averaging a carry of 165 with a 5 yard draw. So at the minute when I go play I go with the following yardages:

          Set wedge - 125
          9 iron - 140
          8 iron - 155
          7 iron - 165

The accuracy is getting better with a rough spread of no wider than 10 yards either side of the target out of about 50 balls.

Pick it apart? Sorry, no can do. Good shape, good whoosh sound, good impact sound. Those latter two tell me more than anything else. Do you remember the drill I posted quite a few times? "Focus on spot where ball was even after it's gone". In other words, focus on what's happening in front of you, not on where the ball is going. You've developed a great swing, now focus on developing great accuracy. If you will accept the advice, that is.

The swing is, as I define it, the production of power. Contact is, as I define it, the transmission of power. You've developed great production of power, now it's time to develop precise transmission of power. You've guessed it already, you must now practice extensively.

                    Thanks Martin.

Indeed accuracy is my next step. The increased power has improved my accuracy, now it's a case of fine-tuning it to enable my brain to think "I wanna put it there".

                    I'm well excited!
