  • Too much inside??

Apologies, I'm sure I've seen this asked recently but can't find it on the search, apologies also in that I can't describe the problem too well but advice would be welcome.

What would be the consequences of the takeaway being too much to the inside? Or to put it another way I have the feeling of as the club comes back of turning too far round on the back swing if thats possible.

if you are bringing the club too much inside on the takeaway then i would think it would result in you hooking the ball.
are you retaining the flex in your rear leg? if not and you are locking your right knee then that can cause a more narrow under the plane swing
just my 2 cents im sure an expert will chime in soon

Just the answer / confirmation I was looking for

Of late I've been pull-hooking every approach shot - which as you'll appreciate as much as most is a killer, especially on those infrequent occasions when the drive's been nailed and a par or better is there for the taking

Wow! I have been pull hooking as well and it is a really distructive shot. For me if I take it too far inside I will will either a) come back to the ball to far from the inside and hit a hook, b) loop it and come at the ball from the outside and pull hook it. That invariably leads to holding off the release on subsequent shots and hitting slices or fat shots. A reall mess.

I have been working (just today so far) on keeping the butt of my clubs pointing at my bellybutton as I take the club back and then making sure I shift my weight forward properly on the downswing (I have been hanging back and flipping my wrists).

I purchaced a similar device to Greg Norman's secret, it is called "the answer" and is made by golf digest. I was able to pick this up at Walmart. With that on it is quite difficult to take the clun back too much to the inside or outside and impossible to flip the wrists. With a good transition and a weight transfer I am hitting it very accuarately (for now).

          Good luck with your swing.

            Hi Robin,

Taking the club away too far inside is normally created by rolling the left forearm in the takeaway creating a fanning action, this will create a shallow plane that opens the claubface and often creates an over the top move, this can create slices or hooks depending on whether you close the face through impact.

Remember what the Swing Factory said, check the face of the club at the end of the takeaway and the toe should point straight up with the face pointing straight ahead. You will see that if you have fanned the face the toe will be pointing back.
