  • Just a quick thanks

To Cmays. His 'quick piece' on weight and ballstriking (centered for irons, back for driver) helped me immensely this weekend at club champ. The only time it failed me is when I got it backwards (weight centered for driver and back for irons).

Played well, shot well (for me.) If I could get up and down, I could post some good scores!

Ditto. No club competition, but ditto on how helpful that has been.

        This one, last paragraph: http://www.golf-tuition-online.com/g...l#post10543043

It's a simple idea, but I was so indoctrinated by the "one swing" idea that I simply tuned out the possibility that something this basic should be done differently with driver and irons. In my case, I found that with the driver I'd get a good hit if I felt that feeling of loading up tension on the inside of the right (trailing) leg. With the irons, this just wasn't working well, and was getting me a lot of thin shots. The difference is subtle, but unmistakable.

I just wanted to return to this again... Here is what cmays wrote in the other thread:

with irons we want to maintain forward weight in the backswing. Your body is not fast enough to fully load the right leg, swing back to the top and transfer all the weight back to the left leg. The body will only transfer about 50% at any time and that is why you load the right leg when hitting a driver and the weight is only transfered back to center in the downswing so you can hit up on the ball. The rest of the weight is transfered after impact.
The more I try to apply this, the better it works. And the thing that amazes me is how subtle it is. The amount of weight that I shift to the left in my iron setup is really about that least that I can actually feel. I actually do it in two steps. First I get myself as balanced, 50-50, as I can. I set my foot position, check posture, and so on. Then I shift just a tiny bit of weight forward, then the backswing begins. If you were watching me you wouldn't see much of anything. But this little move seems to be just enough to enable me to get my hip going and not get stuck on my right leg, and the result is a much cleaner shot.

It's one of those things that's subtle enough that it's easy to forget, or worse, to overcook, especially when you get tired. If you overdo it, you get a reverse pivot and probably will blade the ball.

It was that quote that worked for me.

Another cmays gem that I've been trying out lately is the 'fuctional grip'. I've strengthened my left hand quite a bit (or what feels quite a bit) and it seems much much easier to a) set my wrists and b) sustain the set.
