Re: The Secret by Michael Cortson

I teach only Hogan. I was fortunate to work with John Schlee (a former PGA touring professional in the 60's and 70's) for 7 years back in the late 80's and early 90's in his Maximum Golf School. He was one of the few people to have private lessons from Ben Hogan from 1969-74.
He gave to John everything he knew about the golf swing and how it worked, but what he gave John that no one else could know that studies his swing and photos is what he feels on the takeaway, the backswing, the transition, and the laying off of the club. I feel as though I was handed a torch to carry on what Hogan discovered and developed.
I feel it's my mission to bring Hogan to a generation that really doesn't know his accomplishments. Not in championships, but in swing mechanics for power and accuracy. There hasn't been anybody like him since, (Tiger is close) but who has since provided us with stunning displays of tee to green accuracy?

              Hi cayrbee,

Unfortunately I only have my one copy that I've had all these years. I did have more but they get borrowed and never returned...
I've been trying to see about getting it republished in some format but I haven't had any response. I'll let you know if I see anything in the meantime.
By the way I'm John's assistant in the yellow shirt on that video.

Ok, here we go again. Only $ 79.95 and I can make you into Hogan. Wow, P.T. Barnum was right.

With all respect, the left wrist cocks, the right hinges.
Minor details. I like your left hand/fingers description though.

How much they go into it, I do not know, there are some added little tricks.

In Hogan's description of the left hand and wrist to John Schlee and even in his forward from the 1985 edition of 5 Lessons, Hogan talks about 'twisting' on the backswing or rolling the hands. Not an upcock or a backcock but a twist. There is a totally different feeling at the top of the backswing. If you 'twist' properly, the club will point to the left of your target at the top of your backswing (right handers).
In Hogan's own words, "I rolled the face of the club open away from the ball. That cupped my left wrist. Coming down, the face was moving so fast I couldn't turn it over and hook. I was rotating the club like a baseball bat, and the faster I could rotate it, the more distance I got. Training myself, I would roll the face open as fast and as far as I could. With this technique, I could hit the ball straight and farther."
What Hogan didn't go on to explain in that Forward was exactly what to do coming down. He told John that once you twisted going back, you have to 'untwist' coming down. This causes the left wrist to bow in the impact area. If you didn't 'untwist' properly, the ball would go right every time.

                      Confused yet?

It makes complete sense and I've been teaching it for 20 yrs now with all my students giving me the ahaa! reaction.
Try it. Power and accuracy are almost assured.

                          To all of you guys...

Teachers or pro will never tell you where the secret lies because it's a BIG business.
I discovered the secret. I am just a amateur player but i can tell you that everyone is amazed how consistent and powerful my shots are for a 145 lbs dude. I can hit my 8 iron 160 yrds

                          We all have different swings ; but all equal at I M P A C T

Ok let's assume that you can maintain lag all the way prior to impact...
Now listen carefully folks... the only way to deliver power, consistency and to have have those hands ROLL NATURALLY without any manipulation is to have tour TWO THUMBS (or knuckles )POINTING VERTICALLY TO THE GROUND AT IMPACT without lifting your arms. NO MORE FLIPPING . WELCOME TO BIOMECHANICAL PERFECTION. Try it and change your golf life for ever... This is brought to you free...

Re: The Secret by Michael Cortson

My version of the golf swing's secret(s) is a good grip, good swing balance and and a very consistant impact position, or low point of the swing arc if you will. Ways to achieve those three issues are many hours of practice, adjustments, playing every day, or being naturally gifted in the swinging of the club head. My view is if there really was one golf secret, the owner of that secret would be a swing guru on the pro tours. Heaven knows those pro golfers who struggle to maintain their tour cards could really use it. Hogan had a great swing for his own game, and physical make up. It was his own swing. But early on he had a tremendous hooking problem, which he developed as a caddy. He and other caddies use to bet pocket change on who could hit the ball farther. Accuracy was not involved in their bets. Hogan found that hooking the ball gave him more distance than his competition, and of course more pocket change. This led to swing problems later on. Once his "caddy" hook swing was ingrained into his golf swing it became a bear to get rid of. Of course he did, and the rest is history. Just a side note. There are some old timers who thought Hogan's brother, Royal Hogan was the better athelete of the two brothers. Byron Nelson even thought this to be true. Family circumstances caused Royal to take a different path in life, even though he was fine golfer in his own right. GJS
