I just think in golf, as in life, sometimes you need to throw the received wisdom out of the window, and test it out for yourself...

Go on, then - flame away
Wouldn't dream of flaming you mate because I think both you and Brian have a point.

With the possible exception of driver technology, and that primarily for someone going from pre titanium large heads to a modern design, I don't think you can get significant improvement just by buying new equipment either.

I do think the confidence that comes from feeling good can help your game though. Its a bit like dressing right for a job interview or a hot date - for my Wentworth trip I cleaned and polished my shoes, wore the best shirt and trousers (and like a sexist beast got the wife to press them) just so that I felt good.

Now whether you can quantify the benefit I don't know but hey why not.

Buy them, get them fitted and enjoy them.

Mind you, it sounds as if you were striking the ball well in the shop; half of me wonders how the comparison with the G5s would go when you were playing badly to see if the forgiveness arguments for the G5s hold water either.

I'll offer that, IMO, every golfer should be playing the most forgiving club they can look at. There are some awful sticks out there with top lines as wide as highways, and soles as wide as the Pacific ocean... I can't look at them. I hit them great, but hate their looks.

I play low offset, forged, CNC milled cavity backs. I much prefer the sound that a forged club makes versus a cast (this is this 'feel' thing we talk so much about) and get an iron that's forgiving, but not ridiculously GI.

After that, it's time for a proper fitting. I'm still with Brian for the most part. I've seen fellas go from 25 handicaps to 17 handicaps due to getting clubs that fit. But just buying new heads doesn't do much. If you're a 4, or a 12 even, then new clubs aren't going to help. Short game practice will.
