  • Small Change, Big Results - Anyone else do this?

Besides trying to relax and take tension out of my body/arms, I made one small change recently. At the very beginning of my backswing, I am moving my right elbow inside so that its right on the side of my body.

    Couple things I notice...
    1) When I do this, the only parts that move are the club, hands, arms, shoulders. My hips move very little. BEFORE, I was rotating everything together. With this little move, my shoulders turn and create seperation from my hips.
    2) My left arm comes across my chest. I have a 1PS or flat swing. I might stand a bit more upright than most, but its still very flat and I am either parallel at the top or slightly laid off. Based on everything I read about a 1PS, S&T, Flat Swings, etc etc, this left arm across the chest and staying "connected" is key. With this right elbow move, all I have to do is turn to the top.

Anyone else do this? After looking at some Chuck Quinton, Adam Scott and Tiger pics and videos, it looks as if they do this move as well. I really liked it.

    Thoughts?

Sounds very OPish to me. I know CQ keeps that right arm pretty close - but I wouldn't say he's thinking about it. I believe it's more of a 'allow it to fold' action.

One goal to flying the right elbow is to over-swing and drop the club low at the top. Therefore, tucking the right elbow in would reverse this action to some extent. Dropping the club higher at the top widens the swing and perhaps allows greater accuracy and power. Read below.

Long left thumb: (edit: loose long swing) flying right elbow

Club drops lower at the top of the backswing
      Swing arc is narrower
Distance traveled by clubhead is shorter
Angle between left arm and club is narrower
Thus, movement between top-of-the-backswing and impact is longer
Acceleration is more violent and more difficult to control

Short left thumb: (edit: tight wide swing) tucked in right elbow

Club drops higher at the top of the backswing
      Swing arc is wider
Distance traveled by clubhead is longer
Angle between left arm and club is wider
Thus, movement between top-of-backswing and impact is shorter
Acceleration is smoother and easier to control

Funny how you said "tight, wide swing." I felt more compact throughout the swing, however, I still felt like I had width to my swing. My left are was fully extended, and remained that way during the swing.

Hey Low, how you been? "Allowed to fold" is a good way of looking at it. Yes, I make sure that in my waggle that I am doing it. It might be more of a one-piece-takeaway type move.

        Thanks,
