Re: The 3 skills and me

    hi bdbl
you said about one player being 120 yards away in the rough and the other being 160 away on the fairway, but that would mean the one player hits the ball more than 50+ yards further than the other, if you hit the rough then the ball dont run but hit the fairway and you will get run, the guy that hit the fairway would get a good 20 to 30 yards run but the guy in the rough would only get a few yards run. i now with my game playing at 90% to try and hit the fairway i hit about 250/260, if i open it up i can hit about 180 yards but if it went in the rough then i would only hit about 160/170 yards at most. only a diffrence of 10 yards if on the fairway with both then 20 yards diffrence.
i know i would rather hit a 5 iron from the fairway than a 6 iron from the rough.
    cheers

        hi bdbl
i think i know what your saying, would you rather be tiger and hitting long but in the rough a lot but closer to the green or like say monty where your shorter but on the fairway.
i think it comes down to what your short games like and how good you are out the rough. i'm better off the fairway than playing recovery shots so thats how i play.
        cheers

To tell the truth I'd settle for either since I'm currently short and in the rough and if I has Tiger's strength I'd prefer long.

I was just interested in others views.

before i started with the 3skills concept my driver was in and out of the bag because i was so inconsistent with it but now its my favourite club!

i have learnt to swing within myself when im teeing off and the results have been great.
added to that my preshot routine involves a slow "baseball" swing at hip height and then a slowmo waggle which helps me set my head and spine tilt to the right
100% of fairways hit at the weekend at an average of approx 230/240 yds ill seetle for that any day of the week!

I suspect we are agreeing here; part of my original point was that it's the attempt to keep the ball on the short grass rather than committing to shot that causes the problems - the other part was that having committed as long as you have a 2nd shot that distance is more important than pure accuracy. As you say though its a trade off depending on how the hole is set up.

              Anyway back to 3 Skills.

I came across this the other day - in some ways a typical internet "I was a hacker then I found the secret ... you can play to scratch too" marketing approach - but the "How do you get Club Head Speed" excerpt rings some bells.

              Gordon, err sorry Robin,

The article in that link is very good, it explains exactly what skill 3 is aiming to achieve. I must admit that a number here seem to have difficulty in understanding skill 3 and some information similar to that link would clear it up somewhat.

If you do want to rotate it must be much later than an iron.

Irons are made different from woods and do not perform the same.

Work on your inside out path.
this is the problem i have always had, a lack of distance with my woods relative to my irons.have been using 3sk's for about 3weeks , much better distance with irons and 5 wood ( hitting down ) still struggling with 3 wood, now getting it straight or very small draw , but not enough distance. going to try the straightening of the right arm as previously mentioned , i know i have trouble swinging in towards the ball with the clubface open with the woods, they feel lighter ? something is different , but i will perservere . any tips would be great!

That is a good point. Someone put me right on this before on the forum. I think my body is getting ahead of my arms or something. My back is much improved so I am going to the range tonight to try it all out and will report back.

Re: The 3 skills and me

Made it down to the range last night at last. I tried the drill with the bucket handle sticking out as per the 3sk book. I never had the slightest problem with it. I could do it straight away and never once touched the bucket. My driving was not bad actually. I think my body was getting ahead of my arms when things were going bad. Not sure how that effects the 3sk though. Has anyone any theory on that? Irons still inconsistent. The ball striking was great but a lot still went off to the left. Some just went directly left the others had an exagerated draw curve. So still not sure what is going on there but had to stop as my back was tightening up again. I have saved a ball token so will get back there Friday before the Winter Comp on Sunday.

Re: The 3 skills and me

To counter hooking or pulling when rotating my wrists through impact I try to feel as if I am coming into the ball with the bottom or leading edge of my right hand, like doing a karate chop. This holds the clubface open a little longer and straightens up the ball flight for me.

Also, don't forget this tendency to pull or pull-hook the ball could simply be due to the weight staying on the right side. It's not necessarily the hand action causing it.

Just got back from range. Fortunately I took the misses this time. She noticed that when I pulled to the left, I was re-gripping the club on the backswing (my old fault) so seemingly I still have not cured this. I do not know that I am doing it! Would still welcome suggestions on this as when I did not do it, I was hitting some screaming 3sk shots! Driver and irons alike.

miffin, just played 9 holes with a mate.a tip he gave me was to take your grip on the driver( in my case a 3 wood ) place it on the ground and then squeeze the fingers slightly, if the club head closes a touch then regrip with a little less knuckles showing until the club head stops moving when you squeeze, then grip with the right as well and check again.this should be totally neurtral.
also i have moved the 3 wood back to about 1/2 inch or so forward of centre of my stance, hitting it higher with slight draw instead of a low hook left.
only thing was , in getting my drives better i was not steep enough with the rest of the clubs and struggled to find the sweet spot.but i suppose one step at a time, it's early days yet.
                              hope this helps.

That's an interesting tip, will try that next time out. You are right, it is early days. I am just back from 18holes with a fair mix of good to great shots plus poor to terrible shots. Early days.
