  • Natural Draw/natural Fade Or Maybe ...straight?

Just curious what makes a ball flight natural...........I 've heard way too many times how their NATURAL flight is a draw or a fade........You rarely hear of a natural STRAIGHT flight(which I understand spin)........So what makes it natural for one to hit a draw and the other to hit a fade and then the straight one?......

We can all tweek our stances and grip and path,etc..But would that be natural?

    Just curious no biggie

    Agree AND,
many times its in the hands as cmays has said before.
How you grip the club and how you release.
If you have good release and hit out to right field from in to out, the ball will draw
If you turn more around on downswing, ball will fade.
If you hold on and limit the release, straight or fade.
Lots of variables not to mention open and closed stance.

Stand too upright and the left arm travels to the outside, you turn the shoulders around, make your downward move and the left hand wants to go back to the outside so you are hitting the left ball flight.

Bring the hands in too far and the opposite happens.

To allow the left arm and club to travel straight back we need the bend from the hips.

Many people think to have a flatter plane you allow the hands to come further in, No! It is the wrist and left hand that sets the angle to allow the butt end of the club to point at the ball on the way back.

Just as the left hand and wrist hinging up in the back swing of the upright swing allows the butt end of the club to point at the ground.

The more you hinge the right wrist back, the flatter the swing.

Position of the Club at the Top of the Back Swing:

    1. Club Position

More factors like grip, stance, hands being high or low, ball position, the ball you play and etc.

We use tools every day for all kinds of activities. It is natural for us to use tools. We also like to do as little as we must. We are naturally lazy. So when you ask if it's natural to force a draw or a fade, I have to wonder. Which is more natural to you? Use tools or do as little as you must?

Either way is fine but one requires much more practice and skill.

I think there is a simple answer to this one.

MOST golfers swing from out to in with an open clubface so put clockwise spin on the ball causing a slice or fade (Fade is in most cases someone who hits a slice but prefers to call it a fade)

Others (normally better golfers) hit more in to out putting anti-clockwise spin on the ball and produce a draw, when this is over done or the clubface is closed at impact it produces a hook (again sometimes misrepresented into a draw)

Putting straight on the ball is more difficult than the two previous as it requires good ball contact, timing and clubface position .

So! slices and fades are natural to most golfers. Draws for most require a fairly good swing path and needs working on. Straight!! That's very good other than with short irons.

Go out and hit 20 or 30 shots from a square setup (use some clubs on the ground to line up), and a square face. What ever it does most, draw or fade. is your natural shot.

Now you have a starting point to make adjustments to hit something other then YOUR standard shot, but under pressure, plan for your natural shot, it will happen more often then not.
