Need help guys.....Been trying to eliminate my hips swaying to the left on the down swing. Instead of turning, i sway alot so my misses are always to the right and loss of distance. I try turning most of the time, but when i see my self on video, i tend to sway alot. And so i compensate the sway by flipping my hands at impact. Are there any drills that i can eliminate the sway movement and promote more of a turn.

It sounds like you are casting to me. if so I have had this problem for years and spent a lot of money on pro' lessons trying to find out why I was doing this. All agreed that my hips were too fast for my arms, and came up with various reasons for it and various ways to correct it. One of the things I was told was that I was swaying, but others ruled that out, saying that I had to slow down the hip turn to give the arms a chance to catch up, None of them worked for me, some did short term, bit it would keep coming back. I am not trying to push the 3Skills book, but in trying to perform skill one I found that I had to change my shoulder turn to turn in an more upright turn to enable me to hit down on the ball as this skill required. Since I have changed my turn with the thought of hitting down, I find I am not casting anymore. Not that I did not think of that before, but I obviously overdid it and then I would be told I was too upright, now I make sure that my shoulders do turn around my spine, but make sure my left arm swings upwards and not too far around the body. In other words what I am saying is because I was turning my shoulder too much inside, it was only natural that they swing to the outside with a normal hip turn on the downswing, I know there are many reasons for this problem and I hope you find the answer,the suggestion by Greg, the wall/impact drill is a good idea, that should tell you if you are swinging too far on the inside.

Hi all. Stand only on your left foot and try to sway your hips to the left. What happens? Your head has got to move to the right, ok? So in the downswing if you keep your head too static behind the ball it makes your hips sway more than they should. Try to let your head more free and move it to the left before and even during the impact and compare. Give this a try. Hope this helps you. Don't overdo it!Toni.

As The Hud said big problem with multiple causes. It is a weight shift problem. You just don't get enough weight shifted over that front foot before contacting the ball. It is very difficult to start the rotary movement of your body in the other direction until you get a significant portion of your weight shifted to the front leg and lateral movement ceases. If you keep letting your hip slide forward rotation will be inhibited. You will hear it called "posting up on the front leg". Just like you rotate about your right leg on the backswing, you do the same the other way on the front leg. Greg has a demonstration of the "Walking Drill" on the site. Doing that will give you a better feel of the proper weight shift.
It is not a matter of just simply thinking "I will not let my hip slide forward". I had the problem big time just like you and now I frankly cannot point to one thing that fixed the problem. Just work on the fundamentals that people throw at you and eventually you will find yourself not thinking about it and executing a better turn.
