  • cupped left wrist @ setup

With my stronger grip (3 1/2 knucks) at address there will be more of a cup in my left wrist than others.......

Thing is, if I didn't want to manipulate anything on the backswing (wrist hinge) then my left wrist should still be cupped at the top and that should keep the face square, not closed..Right?

If this is correct then how long would I hold that cup in my left wrist on the downswing and into impact?

    Hi Dawg,

Pretty much what I was looking for, Thx.............

It sure feels weird to actually have a square club face, compared to having it hooded all the time with a bowed left wrist at the top and having the hands way ahead of the club with a flat or bowed left wrist at impact.......Maybe explains why I would have to swing out so much(shank).....?

Sir, I have been reading about your troubles with this very simple swing.

        1. Take a strong grip.

        2. Setup with the left shoulder open, this may mean you need to drop the left foot back a little.

        3. Bump the left hip out a little.

        4. Turn the left shoulder around or chest in the backswing, do not pick the club up in the backswing, allow the hips to turn.

        5. Turn in the downswing.

If you take your strong grip and curl under then you change your swing, right shoulder and hands up in the backswing, left shoulder is dropping down and not coming out, no hip bump is needed because you make a lateral shift to the right and your left shoulder is not coming out in the backswing. You have turned the strong grip into a weaker grip and now can play from the square stance and turn your hips into the Bell Action. Swings do not mix.

See my post hips and shoulders in this section or was that shoulders and hips?

Also the right wrist action ties into the hips and shoulders.

When you swing around the body with a strong grip you just hinge the right wrist back. If you hinge the right wrist up from the thumb you will open the club's face and it will not square itself in the downswing.

If you have the weaker type grip and allow the right shoulder and hands to come up in the backswing, then you can hinge the right wrist back up from the thumb and it will release in the downswing to allow the face of the club to close.

My golf instructor fitted a swing to my body.

When I turn the shoulders around in the backswing my hands are now closer to my body (under the chin) and I feel the right wrist being forced back into a hinge position.

When I swing up he has my hands a little further away from my body (bridge of nose) and my right wrist hinges up from the thumb.

Before the little changes I had some problems like when I swung around in the backswing by turning my arms where throwing out when the hands where further away from the body and swinging upright with the hands too close to the body forced me in an over-the-top like action.

I went through some pulling, but that was better than slicing and shanking and in about 15 minutes/less he sloved the problem for me.

Would it be fair to say going by this that there will always be a cup in my left wrist?....I've watched this quite a few times and understand that it is cupped at the top with the stronger grip (kinda like at address) but I can't tell if his left wrist is cupped 1/2-3/4 of the swing.......That's where I'm confused.......If it is cupped then there is no rolling action?

          Gettin close

If you take a strong grip you are setting the clubface closed at impact, this will require a cupped left wrist at the top and returning to a cupped left wrist at impact to close the clubface. The wrists will still roll through impact as they must do.

            Hope this helps.

I haven't been able to hit balls for a few days as I really didn't feel like it, but have been doing chipping and pitching here at my house keeping the cup in my left wrist .....it's too crazy, I haven't shanked 1, pure contact.......I can't wait to take a full swing.

Talks about karate chopping, I can understand that ,but to karate chop the left wrist does not bow at impact correct? I understand body rotation and all that....

Re: cupped left wrist @ setup

I think I'll sum up my problem.........

I have been getting into the "tray" position at the top with a strong grip, ya know, the club face pointing to the sky, instead of my right wrist more up and down, the "pulling rope" thought. That also causes a cupped left wrist at the top, which is what I want............Now, if I had a weaker grip, I would need for my right hand be in the "tray" position at the top, because if my left wrist was cupped, the clubface would be open.

                      hi Dawg
do you find your wrists don't come into it at impact as much and you seem to have more control of your shots. i find the more you weaken your grip the more the right hand turns over the left at impact and gives you more of a open to square to closed club face at impact but the stronger grip give you a more square to square club face.
                      cheers

I've seen this before. A very eye opening video. It really helped me with the whole flat versus cupped wrist concept.
