  • Wrist problems.

I have played this game for 35 years and got down to 1 handicap for a while although I always had problems with consistency tee to green. I always tended to get a real flick going through the ball with a collapse of the left arm but kind of managed it as best I could. Recently though I worked out that there is something not at all right with my wrists. In fact I simply cannot physically get a flat or slightly arched left or right wrist at any point in the swing. It's just the way my wrists are put together! If I really try to do it, there is a distinct clicking accompanied by some terrific pain and there is simply no way I can do it at speed.

Is there anything I can do and does anyone else experience this? I can't be the only one.

If there is pain, that is a clear sign that you have physical limitations...either in a previous injury healing wrong, or you just were built different.

I would play around with grip and wrist movement combinations. You know what wrist movements are comfortable. Make slight adjustments without pain as the first step. Then begin to move the grip positions and see your results. This my free up your swing and get the results you want.

I would be careful though...doing this on your own without the eye of a qualified pro and or physical therapist might cause more harm.

One radical approach is to see what your other hand does in these positions. Does it also click and have pain?

      Thanks Greg

The other wrist is exactly the same. I've been experimenting with different grips and swings for I guess about 30 years now. I just couldn't work out why I had to collapse everything through impact. Frustrating or what! I've kind of accepted that there is just no way I'm going to cure this but was really wondering if anyone else thinks they have the same problem. If you cannot hit a low shot and have real trouble trying to keep from snap hooking it for no apparent reason then maybe its something to look into.

I really only noticed it when I slowly go through a swing trying to get into the correct positions all the way down and then right at impact with a firm left wrist you can see it kind of click into a different position. People I've shown it to think it looks pretty gross. Frankly I wish I'd never taken up the damn game. Could of saved myself alot of grief and time over the years.....

        Re: Wrist problems.

Have you tried a completely hands free - dead swing?

Set the wrists in a comfortable impact position at setup and do not move them an inch. Adjust your body at setup to basically mimic impact (so have open shoulders and a low right arm - keep equal wright on the feet though)

Now just turn back and through using mostly your body as the rotational power source. You will probably have some arm hinge to time, but keeping the wrists dead should help the position and pain.

Allow your arms to roll though impact. This plays with the face angle a bit, but much easier to control if your body is leading the charge.

          Greg

I tried what you suggested last evening on the range, straight after work. It felt like Arnold Palmer with severe arthritis swinging the club; very stiff and ungainly but hey, the results were promising and I think I was getting a good shoulder turn which is something I never got before. I'll keep at it and stick the swing on camara when I get a chance. I really appreciate your advice.

          Thanks.
