  • Wide or narrow - Nearer or further away

I went to a pro last year who got me playing with quite a narrow stance and got me to stand as close to the ball at address as possible. He said I should be so close that it felt too close. He also said that ball position should be inside the left heel with every club. All this was ok with some clubs but standing too close with a driver invariably ended up with a shank. I also never got any distance with my irons, lots of height, no length. Also, I could never quite understand his ball position theory. This year I've gone with a new pro who seems to teach exactly the opposite. He's got me using a very wide stance with all clubs and I'm standing so far away from the ball that it seems like I'm reaching for it. My driving is 100% better and my iron play is also improving but I feel so uncomfortable. What's confusing me even more is watching the pro's on tv who seem to stand pretty close to the ball with a narrow stance when playing iron shots. Who's right?

    Ace,

I stand with my feet a little wider than shoulder width for a driver and 3 wood, shoulder width for 3i - 8i and less than shoulder width for 9i - wedges. I play 3w - wedges where i put my left hand at address on the inside of my thigh and push it out until my arm hangs straight down and relaxed. The ball position is set after a 2 practice swings so I can see the club position is where the divot starts. I adjust my whole body to the ball not manipulate the arms into position. The arms will just go back to their position when they are naturally relaxed and hanging.

By doing this narrowing of the stance it forces a steeper angle of attack as the clubs progress. A high shot with a ton of spin results. One can stick shots on the green withthis philosophy.

This is just my way that works for me. Everyone has their own game and own way to do things. You have to find what works for you.

Thanks Golfbald, I just tried that and it feels much more comfortable and natural than what I've been doing lately. Don't know what my pro's going to say when I go for my next lesson though.

        Ace,

I believe you have to use sound measurements to the ball. Everyones body is different but measurements to the ball in the setup are a constant. In talking with Dr. Mike Austin, I'll stick to the correct measurements to the ball everytime. It's highly repeatable and the physics and kinetics are sound. I would ask him where he learned to teach that method and is it based in science.

If your paying for lessons, find out where the instructors doctrine comes from. A good instructor is worth their weight in gold! After being on the forum for a while, I would seek Greg or Greg after reading the sound advise given here.

I'll be interested in knowing his reply, if you don't mind sharing!
