Hi,

just checked weight transfer discussion and view the Hogan power move video.

What's the best or intuative use of video you've seen in golf instructions?

(And who's doing interesting video swing intrtuctions? Anyone had a 3D model done from their swing?)

I have over 800 golf swing video clips. Only two of which are of my own. I'd say the best use of video for golf instruction is to learn from others. Monkey see, monkey do.

You didn't ask for the worst use of video. A pity because that information is even more telling.

Couldn't agree more.

I have many golf swing clips on my PC. I use them exactly in the "monkey see, monkey do" fashion. Mainly, Snead and Hogan are the ones I use for this.

I have a catalogue of clips of my own swing, but I only refer back to them to see where I've been and how much I've improved (or not!). I don't use them for development purposes.

To use video correctly, one has to know what one is looking for, or at. I have come across many who don't, and I've come across others where I have completely changed the perception of their own swing. But I had to be guided initially. My own swing perception was radically changed by my coach with the use of video, and it's made a huge difference to my progress.

The internet age is great isn't it? I probably have a core group of about six videos to which I refer to keep the right swing thoughts in my head. There is lot's of great stuff out there.

From a full length instructional video stand point there are three that stick out in my mind.

Best coverage of the fundamentals and keeping things simple:
Greg Norman's Better Golf

Best diagnosis of problems and recommendation of cures:
Nick Faldo's Faults and Fixes

Best explanation of golf concepts, terms, and how they relate to the swing:
Rick Smith Signature Series : Advanced Player

From a video analysis standpoint there are different programs out there that compare you to models: ModelGolf, Advanced Motion Measurement (formerly Skill Technologies), Nick Faldo Academy, V1 Golf, GolfTec, etc. The ones with scientific models might be the best (ModelGolf, AMM) for players without physical limitations (and more technically sound games), but regardless of which method used they are all prone to the interpertation, communication skills, and knowledge of the teacher or instructor. Just because a person has been teaching for X number of years, and they use X equipment doesn't mean he/she/they are good, or are going to help you improve. Even if the person can look at a screen, and say you do X different than the model if the instructor can't explain it correctly and explain how and why you should change it (if it is even significant to change) then the lesson will be useless to you.

I'm looking on this. I think that it's very difficult to give advice to a golfer about a swing. Swing is not controlled consiously. I'll check the different video analysis software. Some of them I have used and I tested SiliconCoach today and got a link to www.golfachviever.com and Simi and Contemplas are also on my email list.

What about new ways to demontrate something important by using a video? Videos that show an interesting point of view?

I'm looking on this. I think that it's very difficult to give advice to a golfer about a swing. Swing is not controlled consiously. So knowing what is wrong - or different from a model - does not equal to correction. (Swing might be wrong even it looks like the model, if the proprioseptic control is timed wrong.) Most of the swing happens unconsiously - but not unwillingly.
It's a for of art to be able to correct an unconsious movement. It needs very skilled instructor.

During execution, we have no time to think the swing through. But during practice and repetition, we can take our time and think through any part of the sequence. If you've ever seen an athlete, dancer or anybody repeat an action in slow motion, they are thinking the motion through.

I am really impressed with Ledbetter Interactive, particularly so, since you can load your swing, and run it right next to models that demonstrate faults and the beginning, top, and execution of your golf swing - so you know what to look for. It has helped me immensely. The one down side, is the software does not allow you to save a swing that you have analyzed – this is deliberate- since Ledbetter want’s you to send your swing to his company for analysis – so, I am looking for a good program that will do video capture, so I can capture my very limited analysis and see how things are getting along.

Any suggestions….

Thanks for providing me with a link to all of those videos. I am unable to save them - I am wondering if they are downloadable... I am running Vista - it is new to me - and when I attempt to save the video it states that option is disabled...

If you get the free Home Trial version of V1 software you can download all these videos and watch them with it. You can also use the tools to play in slow-mo, mark lines circles etc on the screen to allow you to analyse them better
