Re: Need more driving distance
A fuller rotation prior to impact. If you allow the lower body to be the leading and driving force to the swing, the upper body and hands staying in a relativly relaxed state, will be propelled with controllable and effortless force.

Make a full body turn so that you rotate your body with a smooth tempo around your spine. keep your arms relaxed and in the centre of your chest so that everything rotates together. Allow your wrists to work open in the back swing and rotate closed in the follow through so that the rotational forces are amplified through your hands and into the clubface.
I find these videos helpful ( The whole Swingbuild set on Youtube are good):

Re: Need more driving distance
hi there,
Scientifically, around 80 to 85% of the clubhead speed in the swing comes from the snapping or whipping the clubhead around the hands without impedance.
The clubhead moves much too fast to consciously control - to try to guide it or keep up with it is a fool's folly. You must throw the clubhead around the circle with reckless abandon to hit the ball out there, starting from the top.
Hope this helps!

Re: Need more driving distance
I would not endorse the above post. Strength means very little in hitting a golf ball a long distance. What you are after is supple quickness - whoosh the clubhead through the air. Any strength gains you make in the core area as a byproduct from swinging in this manner will be much more specific to promoting this action than any gym motion.

I would say there is truth in all that has been said. We only have to look at the Asian golf scene, you won't see them bench pressing 200 pounds, most are very slightly built and supple but I bet you will find the muscles that matter will be well toned.Take a look they are big hitters.

More Power
I best advice I got is the following. Play the ball towards the front of your stance just inside the instep of the left foot (right hander). This ensures you are hitting the ball on the up.
Take a full shoulder turn. Your left shoulder on the backswing should end up right underneath your chin.
Finally, stay behind the golf ball right throughout the golf swing while still ensuring you finish with your weight on your left side (right hander). In other words, don't let your shoulder and head get in front of the ball at any stage during the golf swing, this limits your power. There's a great video on YouTube that illustrates this technique perfectly.

Re: Need more driving distance
Here goes:
Tee the ball a little higher than you think you should
Take the club in your left hand and set up to the ball making sure your left shoulder is a little closed and certainly higher than the right.
Grip the club in the fingers and with a light grip pressure, take a few waggles and feel how active the hands become.
relax the arms and feel like they are spaghetti
Turn into the backswing with the chest and just let the arms go along for the ride while flexing the left knee inwards and slightly back while keeping the right leg flexed but solid
Don't stop the backswing until you see the left shoulder come under your chin and then feel the wrists hinge the club.
The downswing is merely a shift off the right leg into the left side while dropping the right elbow down to the right hip.
Keeping the hands relaxed, you will feel the clubhead ripping past you into the ball and beyond while you finish nice and high on your left leg.
There's lots more but this will do for now.
