  • Bad slice

    Hey everybody
Just wondering if anyone can help me with a bad slice i have developed.
I can normally drive the ball about 270 yards but as of late i have lost the distance, the ball goes high in the air and then starts drifting off to the right.

    Regards

    Hello,

Your ball flight is caused by the clubface being open at impact. This adds loft which causes the high ball flight and clockwise side spin that bends the ball to the right.

You need to work on closing the clubface through impact. The open face can be caused by many things like : Weak grip, tight grip, failure to release the club, poor body turn etc. Maybe a few lessons would help?

      Bad slice

I took some lessons to help cure my slice. The pro told me to position my right elbow on my hip to keep me inside. That helped for a long time, but every now and then the evil slice returns. I am going to try making the grip stronger and see how that works. I also wonder if new longer drivers are causing me to block. Not getting around with the head quick enough and pushing right. Maybe choking up might help. Maybe time for another lesson.

Could be your set up. Standing behind the ball, pick a spot ahead of the ball and left of target while holding the club in your left hand. Walk to the ball and take your address leading with your left shoulder, then and only then, move your right hand up to the grip from low to high. Make sure your left shoulder stays closed and your right shoulder is below that level.
Now with relaxed grip and hands, take your swing.
Could be you are setting up open with shoulders and aligned too far left of target and possibly ball too far forward.
In any case, slices usually come from open clubface and or out to in swing path

I would not change your grip to go stronger. Frankly I hate it when that's the solution people give. You just simply need a bit of understanding.

First off, the ball will start about 80% in the direction that the clubface is aimed. Then it will curve AWAY from the direction of your path. So if you swing left, the ball will curve to the right. Got it?

So I'm going to simplify path and clubface for you by relating it to just two parts of your body.

Wherever your left elbow points is where the path will go.

Wherever the face of your wristwatch is facing, is where the clubface is aimed.

Do WHATEVER YOU HAVE TO, to make the elbow point either at the target or a little to the right of the target.

Rotate ONLY your forearm to make your wrist watch face the target.

If you don't have enough strength in the left arm to do this, then use your right arm to help. How exactly?

The further down your right shoulder and elbow goes, the easier it will be to point your left elbow out to the right.

The more you "turn the doorknob" with your right forearm, the more it will rotate your left forearm.

But it all comes down to those two things.... Point the left elbow at the target or just to the right of it. Face your wrist watch to the target with your forearm.

See my very recent Pete Cowen post. It has a youtube video attatched which cured my slice.

            Best of luck!
