  • Driver and 3 wood flex differences

    Hi All,

Just wondering if someone here could confirm my thoughts on this for me ------

I have just switched to a Cobra 440sz 10.5 reg driver as I couldn't hit my old Taylormade R540 9.5 stiff for love nor money. Always slicing/heavy fade. (Taylormade club was recomended during a fitting session) I'm now very pleased with the Cobra.

My main question is this - my 3wood is a Taylormade Vsteel stiff - and I'm nearly always fading (can't draw) with this too ( I'm a little too close to the ball at the moment so this doesn't help either but I'm fixing that ). I'm considering trying out a regular shaft to see if this makes a difference. I'm 10 times more accurate with my driver now than I am with the 3 wood.

    Any opinions Please.

The stiffness in the flex could definatly be the reason for the fades. So, demo the 3w and see what happens.

Why didn't you demo the origional driver before you bought it? Taking someone's advice - especially the seller's. Anyone willing to sell clubs should always allow demo's. If not, then go to the next seller that does. You can always go the person with the best price afterwards. (I'll get off my "told-you-so" box....sorry)

      Hi Greg,

funny enough I did demo the clubs. The R540 and the Cobra were one of the clubs I hit. Along with a Cleveland, ERC fusion and some others to name but a few. I was on a simulator at an AmericanGolf Discount store nr me. Service and staff were great. According to the readout on the screen the R540 was the club for me. I distinctly remember being told that the carry on the 540 was by far superior and that I was hitting a nice draw ???.

Strange how I couldn't hit it at all after and still couldn/t no matter how I tried in the following months. Expensive mistake but now rectified.

Thanks for the input on the 3wood flex - that confirmed what I think may be the problem.

      cheers for the input.

Re: Driver and 3 wood flex differences

        Greytoms,

In my opinion the shaft has much more to do with the way a club feels than the head. I compete in Long Drive and build my own clubs. One can take the exact head and put in a different shaft and make the club feel different. Not just flex but brand also. A reputable clubfitter can put a different 3 wood shaft in and make it feel right for you.

One other tip, expensive shafts are not always better shafts. There are several lines of shafts like Accuflex, SK Fiber and Mercury that are top shelf at a great price.

This may give you other alternatives,
