  • Drives going right

Analysing my last couple of rounds it shows up that most of my drives are going to the right. When I say right they might still be on the fairway or the first cut. So, not that far right. I take a lot of trouble aiming correctly and they do not slice. Some fade a little bit but not all. They just seem to set out right of where I am aiming and stay on that line. I am getting decent distance. So, I do not know where I am going wrong. Any ideas please?

A few suggestions from someone with similar problems (assuming you are right handed).

Alignment - but I think you've ruled that out.
    Weight hanging on back foot.
    A block.
Trying to steer the ball and leaving face open.
    Lack of commitment to shot.

I suffer from one, or any combination of these at times

They are good suggestions, thank you. 2 queries though. What actually defines a block? Also you might be right with the "not committing". I have found swinging easy gives me good results. So, perhaps I am swinging too easy.

Asking what a block is reminded me of this link I posted earlier....

Butch Harmon: Why You Miss Right: Golf Digest

... as it says on the tin, some ideas on why you might miss right.

I think "swinging easy" is different to "lacking commitment" but I'm not sure how to explain the difference except to say that I'm talking about that tentative attempt to steer the ball to safety - which almost always fails - rather than a definite swing of the club that picks the ball up on the way and deposits it down the middle of the fairway - I think you can swing easy and still swing with purpose.

Yep, that's a good Butch Harmon thing. It might be that as I do try to swing from the inside a lot. When I get chance I will go down the range and try that tip and see what happens.

Take your address with feet about 1 foot apart, take half swings paying attention to tension free hands/arms and feeling the wrists hinging. I would bet that you hit 10 out of 10 shots straight or with a little draw.
            What does that tell you.

Have someone line up your clubface for you--quite often you think it's perpendicular but it's actually slightly open. Your eyes will play tricks on you, especially if you wear glasses-just another suggestion...Wil

                Re: Drives going right

I had the same problem. Took great care in lining up and setting my clubface, but kept pushing shots to the right.

Turned out I had a tendency to forward press slightly before starting my backswing, and this opened up my clubface, causing the shots to go right.

I made an effort to stop that extra forward press, and it helped a lot.

                  Re: Drives going right

I think body slide is a big factor in creating pushed shots, work on staying stacked and rotating more. Starting the ball out right is not such a bad thing as long as you can draw the ball back, think on hitting the ball from the near back quadrant through to the far front quadrant with the toe of the club passing the heel.

                    Re: Drives going right

When I push the ball it's because my hips are too far a head of my hands in the the down swing. I wind up hitting the ball too late with an open club face that is square to the club's path. Other poor swing issues for a pushed shot might be too flat of a swing, or a ball position that is to far back in the stance.

What ever the cause, a pushed shot still has a swing path that is inside to out, which is a good thing. In other words, it's not that bad of a miss compared to some other poor ball flights.

Thanks everyone. I didn't manage to get to range. But have taken everything in and it's a comp today so will see what happens.

False alarm. Comp cancelled due to weather. Might get to range yet.

Ha. Was just about to post a good luck message for the comp.

Have a good time on the range though.

                          Re: Drives going right

Whenever I block my shots to the right ( more with driver and long irons ), it happened because I spin out the hip way faster than my shoulders ( arms ) could stay connected .
Keep your parts connected and you'll be fine.

One thing you can try if you are hitting blocked shots:

                            - Instead of aiming your feet parallel to the target, aim your feet at the target and your club face at the target.

If you are not comfortable doing this then ensure your shoulders are not aimed too far left of your target, if so, close them a touch.

By doing this, your shot produced should be a slight draw.

Remember to hit at least 50 balls doing this drill for muscle memory.

                              Re: Drives going right

Usually when shots are going straight right (rather than a slice) it is a lack of release. The release is done with the left forearm (for right handed golfers) rotating through impact with the left elbow always pointing at the left hip through the ball. This allows the clubface to "square" and prevent that straight shot to the right.

Check out this tip on my website: http://www.ritson-sole.com/golf-tips...hrough-impact/

                              Hope this helps.
