      Re: no distance

I'm glad someone brought this up as I was about to ask myself. I think there are several reasons why you're not getting varying distances with varying clubs. In no particular order of importance:

      1. Your swing mechanics is wrong i.e. loss of power, not using clubface loft to lift ball.

      2. Clubface is not getting clean contact i.e. not sweet spot contact.

      3. In order to generate some power in the swing, you need to have strong muscles, especially in the core areas i.e. spine, abs, shoulders, arms, wrist, hands, thighs, hips, basically overall good fitness level.

            Littleh,

Let's look at the source of distance. Despite what everyone tells you, distance is not generated from clubhead speed alone. You can swing as fast as you damn well like but without rotation, power and a good strike you're not going to get the ball out of your shadow. Those are the 3 components of distance.

Think of hitting the golf ball like a slingshot in Roman times. To get the rock to hit the enemy's castle they needed: the arm to go w-a-y back, they needed it to release with not only speed but power as well and finally they needed the rock to leave the cradle at the right time.

Size and weight has zero to do with distance. Look at Ian Woosnam - about your height and probably classified as 'slightly rounded' and he was THE LONGEST driver of the golf for many years. I only weigh 63kgs and I hit the ball around 230m/240m with a driver at 75% throttle.

So, how do you get distance?
            1. You need to have a look at your backswing. Are you turning your body behind the golf ball, reaching as far back as possible without overswinging or breaking your spine to 2 places? Your upper body and right knee should be behind the golf ball.
            2. Are you well levered onto your right side with the power built up in your right rip and shoulder at the top of your swing? There's no point to turning fully if you have got any power stored up ...
            3. The 90* angle between the club and arms at the top of the swing needs to stay that way for as long as possible ... even to when the grip and hands reach your right hip. Then you let the club go hard at the golf ball. This is a late release. If you release the club earlier in your swing the club reaches maximum velocity and you lose your power before you get to the golf ball.
            4. Finally you need to move your right side through impact at the same time as the club getting every last ounce of power to the golf ball at the moment of impact.
            5. At impact you need to make sure you're still behind the golf ball. Imagine you're trying to blast the golf ball through a wall that is up against your left side. If you slide the left side or move forwards of the golf ball, you're certainly losing power.

It sounds simple and it is but each step takes some practice and looking at with a golf instructor. But now you have the basics, go and practice each point, look in a pane of glass or a mirror ...

Letme know if you need more help or want to see pictures.

              Re: no distance

There are many drills and plenty of pictures. It's just a very broad area to cover in one posting. There's a very good book out there that explains all aspects of the game.

It's called How I Play Golf by Tiger Woods. Great pictures that shows how the body and clubs looks like from various angles i.e. front, back, side, and overhead. It really helps.

Mind I ask how long you've been playing golf?

                  TeachingPro,

Last week my PGA instructor told me a criteria for getting distance is having a wide arc. What he meant is that you need to have a good long wide backswing with a good long wide follow through where in the end of the swing you stand tall with belly facing target and shoulders aimed left of target. Is this true?

                        Well, yes and no.

You want a wide arc but not a stretch! Often as soon as a teacher says wide, learners start to stretch the club out there and all sorts of unpleasant things start to happen. You can swing as wide as you like but if the arms 'disconnect' or you release early for example - you've wasted everything.

I prefer to teach a late release first, then backswing position and the finally a wider arc.

Follow through means zero - the ball's gone. Within 3/100ths of a second the ball is GONE! Follow through isn't going to help you at all. What you need is to stay within your swing arc and keep on moving to a balanced finish. You have to do this not only becuase you have the momentum but you want to hit through the golf ball and that's why teachers always tell you swing through and finish.

                          Dynamix,

I saw your video and here's what I have to say. I may note be a golf instructor but I do know what I see.

                          1. You're rushing your swing, especially your backswing. Go slower.
                          2. I immediately see head shift to left and reverse pivot on backswing which definately attributes to your loss of power.
                          3. In side view, your right leg got straight, loss of coiled power.
                          4. You are still very young, your muscles haven't developed and matured.

That's about all I can gather from the clip. If I can see your hands, then maybe I could give more feedback.

I didn't see the clip, but from what I read it sounds a lot like reverse weight transfer. Also, I am assuming there is no divots taken either.
