  • Driving Tip

I read a driving tip that has worked for me, so I thought I would pass it along. The tip was from Steve Bann's publication Simply Golf Back to Basics. When you are setting up for your drive, turn your trailing foot outward about 30 degrees. Turn your inner foot -the one clossest to your club) out 10 degrees - this ought to facilitate turn rather than slide and also creates resistence as you apprach the top of your swing. The 30 degree change in my trailing foot worked for me, and I found the 10 degree change a little difficlult.

Also, I have been reading a lot about creating leverage with your clubs. In this sense the swing is more of a pulling motion, that coupled with hitting from the inside - I have tried using my body and less arrms - it is difficult and seems slow - but the ball goes farther. I reported here earlier that I was having trouble with my Taylor 540xd - and the problem was with me not the driver. I was swinging out of my shoes, and with an unstable lower body u are headed for a world of driving pain. I keep my lower body quiet, and I am doing much, much better - now on to the irons!

You should have worked out your irons first!!

      Re: Driving Tip

I have been working on my irons and decided to move on. Tried my hybrid M4, without much success. Was only hitting it about as far as my 5-iron. So I'm sure I'm missing something. I understand it to be a rescue wood so I didn't want to practise using a tee either. I am wondering if I would have better luck with my 4 wood or 1 wood? Made the usual changes like widening my stance, putting the ball further in front etc.. But not sure why hitting the hybrid off the mat is not coming off quite cleanly...

I have a hybrid 3 iron and I tried positioning the ball just one ball width ahead of the middle of my stance, contrary to what I'd read, and it worked much better.

Thanks Todd. I guess I have to experiment with the various combinations to see what suits me best as well. How far do you generally hit your hybrid 3 by the way?

From the fairway, IF I get a clean shot and don't top it, I hit 180 yds or so. From a tee, 195.

              Re: Driving Tip

I've just started trying my hybrid M4 and also my 4 wood. Have not been able to even attain 150yd with either of them. There were a couple of shots where I seem to have hit them very nice, but I think with the 4 wood was only about to hit about 135m or 150yd.

I'm also kinda confused. My set comes with a 1 wood, 4 wood, hybrid M4, and then 5 iron to 9 iron. Will I abe ble to cover all the range of distances properly with this combination (esp the transition between the 5 iron and M4)?
