Re: I am seriously worried!!!! READ

You might try moving the ball around in your stance and widening and narrowing the distance of your feet also try moving (as you are setup to the ball) your back foot (right foot if right handed) back away from the ball a couple of inches or less this should make it easier to get your club around your body and release with more power. I hope this Helps.

P.S. This will likely cause you to draw the ball which will add distance.

To gain more distance with your driver make sure that you are swinging in control and not as hard as you can. I used to have trouble getting yardage on my drives they would usually go about 230 or 240 and the occasional one would go 300 then I realized that if I swung slower and more in control I would make better contact and hit the ball down the middle more often. Since I have begun swinging more within myself and not attemping to kill the ball every time I step up to the tee I am now hitting the ball routinely over 300 yards. Try and swing at about 60% and then gradually work up to where you wont lose control of your swing. Trust me, swinging at 60% speed the ball goes further than you think it would.

HI ,Well rick, no doubt about it you are swinging too hard. In an effort to get more distance you are disrupting your natural tempo . Try swinging alittle easier. A goodtip would be to watch Ernie Els, you wont find a better example to show tempo and effortless power.Give it atry, the results will convince you.

You will probably ignore me because I am a 23 hcp, but I think you are losing power in your swing because you are releasing the wrists a little bit too early. It is impossible (for me) to see in your posted video (due to quality cannot stop it at a clear image), but watching it over and over it seems to be there.

If you look at Ernie on the downswing his wrists are still kocked when his hands are at his right thigh.
            http://redgoat.smugmug.com/gallery/79626/1/2770246
Notice that the shaft of his club moves from parallel to the ground to almost perpendicular at impact. At the same time his hands have only moved the distance of about his hips. This means that the clubhead is moving very fast.

You have said in earlier posts that you have a strength problem. If that is the case then in my opinion you need to probably work on your forearm strength so that you can hold your wrists in the kocked position longer.

Putting the tape on the driver might be a bad idea only beacuse there is a lot of science behind the weighting and ballance of that driver. Personally if you spend a large amount of money on a nice driver and put .20 cent tape on it you have pretty much wasted your money on all that science and technology and should have bought a Wal-*art driver and tried putting tape on it. Get what I'm saying??

Be careful where you put lead tape on your driver. Since you have a 460cc driver, the clubhead specifications are probably maxed to the conforming limits. If you put lead tape on it and it exceeds any of the limits then you will be disqualified from competitions (I think this would be worse than 30yds shorter). If you decide to put lead tape on the club it should be above the sole on the back of the clubhead. The lower the desired launch angle, the higher the tape should be placed. (Remember that added weight means a slower swing speed, and consequently less distance.)

You have a 10.5° driver, which should give you good distance and a good launch angle.

Your ball is starting out at a really high launch angle.
Your clubhead must be coming up on the ball too much, consequently you are then lofting (opposite of delofting) the clubface too much. Do you ever hit the ground behind the ball? Or do you tee it up really high to avoid this?

Work on trying to come down on the ball with your driver. This may sound odd but this should lower the launch angle, increase the backspin and result in longer distance.

Here's more advice from a hacker!

I have a book of faults and fixes and it says that the cause of too high ball flight off the tee is swinging down too steeply, which contradicts what some others have said.

But here's the explanation; see what you think.

With the driver, you're hitting the ball after the low point of the swing, "on the way up." If you come down steeply, your club face is delofted *on the way down*, but the shape of your swing on the way up is going to be steep too, so on the target side of low point your club face would tend to be *hyperlofted* a little, and that's going to send the ball high. So making your swing wider should correct it.

Look at that picture of Hogan's swing path again--a horizontal ellipse with a long wide path through the ball. You can bet he didn't sky that ball.

                      Ricky,

I'm only 5ft 9 and i hit the ball further than most of my playing partners two of whom are over 6 ft and scratch golfers who go to the gym 3 times a week to work on their power. I average about 300e.(Im off a 3 handicap) I can only really help by telling you my swing thoughts and they are to keep as much width in my swing as possible and to think of speed and not power when you hitting it. The most important thing is rythmn. The power comes fromt the coil you can build in your backswing.
                      Good luck

                        Rick,

You are still young (and from what I see from your video that you are still quite light) so I wouldnt worry too much about that yet. Focus on technique, e.g. good coiling, plane, weight transfer, impact position and as you get taller and stronger (and heavier) you will definitely see improvement.

I myself was quite thin when I was young and was never a big hitter compared to my other friends. But now, I have no problems with length anymore and keep up and hit it much further that most of my friends now.

To give you a bit of an idea on how i improved, when I was 15, I could only hit my 5iron 150-160yards. Now at 27, I can hit 200yards carry comfortably without giving it a rip. My drives too now probably average 260-280 and when I give it a bit more, 300+ is possible as well.

A good thing to do is just keep up with general stretching as well as strength exercises. You dont have to do too much but you will see improvement for sure.

After two hours on the range you will be nearly always be able to hit the ball, your timing will catch up and negate any other swing faults.
You wont be able to rely on this on the course, practice like you play.

                            Ain't that the truth!

I've had the "range breakthough" that doesn't make it to the course more times than I care to remember. When you hit one ball after another, in fairly quick succession, you can adjust your timing to compensate for flaws in your swing and get the illusion that you've fixed them. Greg Willis makes the same point on his web site.

On the golf course you have to walk between shots, 5 mins is enough time to lose your timing.

I'm rather tall and lanky, 6'2" and 165 pounds, and that leverage allows me to crank drives in the 300yd range, but even if you can't get the same leverage, there are a few fundamental things that will make the ball fly farther with less effort. Here are a few keys that I use:

                                1) at address, note the angle of the shaft and imagine in your mind's eye your left arm (if you are right handed) matching the same angle at the top of the backswing. You can't easily achieve this angle, and shouldn't try to match it, its more of a swing thought that widens the swing arc and makes it easier to come at the ball from the inside.

                                2) at address, completely cock your wrists so that your arms stay in the address position but the shaft is pointing directly away from the target line and the toe of the club pointing straight in the air. feel this position and try to get to it in your downswing, this will help you create some torque in the shaft and aid delivery of the club from the inside.

and remember that almost all big drives have a perfectly balanced finish and that you want to swing more efficiently, not harder.
