  • Too much backspin??

    Hi everyone,
I am trying to solve my driver problems for quite a while now but I seems only able to solve my slicing problem.

My problem now I am trying to solve I think is too much back spin? ... what happens is that my ball when using my driver starts off quite nicely but in the middle of the flight, the ball tend to shoot up sky high and just drop right down without much roll.

anyone with a soln to such problems ??? my distance seems to suffer greatly ..

This happens me too, but I dont mind as my driver distance is fine (and its still wet and winter-like here in Ireland)
How far does your drive usually carry?

I asked this questions about 2 weeks ago and got **** for answers so I went and talked to a pro. It has to do with lauch angles how your hitting on the ball. Chances are your launch angle is wrong and yopur hitting down on the ball

Well my drive with the back spin is about 210M ... I believe if i can cure that problem .. i think i am able to hit at least 240M?

what do you mean my launch angle ? .. is it hitting the ball during upswing ? ...

Launch angle is just that - the angle that the ball is launched on.

The pundits are telling us that a 14° LA with ~ 2400 RPM of backspin is the ideal launch condition.

So, you need to figure out your Angle of Attack (positive for hitting on the upswing, negative for hitting on the downswing) and then figuring out how much loft you need to find 14°.

that is real great .. i believe that without a machine I am unable to find out thise info right ?

                Wrong.

Pythagoras gave us a wonderful theorem that allows anybody with a club, a ball, and a vertical surface to hit into determine their launch angle.

The poor man's version involves a tarp.

Hang your tarp. Make sure it can't blow around. Setup your ball (or tee) a known distance away (10 feet is nice). Put some cornstarch on your ball (or colour your ball with a dry-erase marker), tee it up, and hit it.

Note where it hit the tarp. Then measure how far up the tarp your ball made contact.

Now it's time for the Pythagorean Theorem. The distance from tee to tarp is your X axis. The distance from ground to impact less the tee height is your Y axis. Solve for the hypotenuse. VoilĂ ! Launch angle.

                    Re: Too much backspin??

Would hitting down with a driver necessarily cause a higher launch angle than if it was swept up?

I have the same problem. I've been practising so much with the irons, on hitting down on it and getting a solid impact. Now I absolutely don't know how to sweep up with the woods

                      Re: Too much backspin??

Hitting down necessarily decreases launch angle (as you're still coming down in your swing, delofting the club). I have this problem when my swing is rusty, and push my tee shot on a super-low trajectory.

                        Re: Too much backspin??

I thought that hitting down would create more back spin which means that the ball will bounce off the club at a higher (launch) angle? Do correct me if I am wrong. Thanks!

The reason I'm asking is because my woods go high and then die off, and I assume that it's related to a high launch angle, and I thought the reason why this is happening is because I am not sweeping up but hitting down on them like the irons, therefore it's causing a lot of back spin. I guess I must have made some wrong connections here...

                          Re: Too much backspin??

i'm no expert, but i had this problem.

i fixed it by squaring up my shoulders to the way my feet were facing and moved the ball back in my stance..

i use to set up with open shoulders facing left and my feet facing right. the ball would look inside my front foot. if i set up like that again it would be well outside.

instead try and line yourself up more and make sure your shoulders are lining up with your feet. move that ball back which should help. just think you have an iron in your hand and set up exactly the same.

worked for me.. give it a go.
