For a while now ive been considering getting a 3 wood, i have a five wood which i hit quite well and consistently around 200mtrs, however i was always ten-thirty mtrs off the first hole par five off my golf course for a second shot. I tryed looking for my dads 3wood steelhead which he doesnt use as he doesnt need it, but stumbled upon my old steelhead driver 10*, so i thought Id try it as a 3 wood. got the required distance wouldve made the par 5 green in two if only it was a tad bit straighter, but still was a good chip for birdie. I was wondering if a 3 wood would still be more suitable too hit off the deck. I dont use the steelhead as a driver because it doesnt getting the consistent length my titleist does off the tee though i now use it on the tight short par 4's. Any suggestions.

Handicap of 7 I'm quite jealous. So why is it you need the 3 wood? You say that the first par 5 you're only a chip away on for 3.

I suppose the question would be if you used your new 3 wood for the second shot in, would you be on consistently on or in the sh*t?

I wouldn't be using the 10* off the deck. The driver's good to get out of the rough surrounded by some trees, by hitting a low punch shot with distance.

I love my three wood (13*) and use it more often than not than my 10.5* off the tee. Both my three wood and five wood (21*) are quite handy off the deck too.

Rac, do you need the 3 wood for just this purpose on the par 5 or could you use it elsewhere to improve your game?

hey, im also off 7.. there are about 4 maybe 5 holes i would use it on. Its reasonably accurate, but i have a feeling a 3 wood would be much more accurate. At the moment ive just decided to use it until i get a bit more credit for the pro shop so i can get a new 3 wood.

To each his own on bag make ups. No need to pack around a club you hardly ever use, when a grip choke up or down will deliver the same yardage. Up untill recently I have always hit a 9.5 driver, while also having a 15* 3 wood in my bag. I now find I am using my 3 wood off the tee more so than my driver. I am at a point now where accuracy is more important than distance. I don't carry a 5 wood, but I do carry a 2 iron. What I have been expierimenting with lately is a low profile 12* driver/fairway wood. If it works out, it might replace both my current driver, and 3 wood. Back when a wood was a wood, my go to club was a Ping Eye 2, 12* 2 wood. I still believe this was best club ever made for any handicap. After proper fitting is completed I am hoping this current 2 wood I am working on will work just as well as that old Ping did.....GJS

1. I'm not positive about the ideal launch conditions for hitting off the deck, but based on ideal driver launch conditions (if looking for a max distance fairway wood), I would say that a 10* would probably not get maximum distance because the angle would be too low. Off the tee you can compensate by hitting up on the ball, keeping spin lower. But if you get the distance...

2. If you're trying to hit greens with it, distance being equal, you may want a club with more carry and less roll. Again, if you find that it carries and stops adequately...

3. I may be wrong but I think that club has a U shaped sole. It may not glide on the ground as well as a true 3W. If you aren't topping/chunking shots...

Those would be my only reservations about using it as a fairway wood. If you're looking for a good, value 3W, I really like my steel shafted V-Steel by Taylormade ($109 brand new at big retail chains, cheaper elsewhere). If money is no object for the distance, the Tour Edge Exotics 3W ($350!!) is a beast.
