  • Can't get past 200 yrds!

    Hi

I am looking for some advice on my driving. I have just changed my driver to an R7 425 with the standard reg shaft as I was only hitting my old drive 180 - 200 yrds (having a slowish swing I thought it was best to move back to a reg shaft would help).

I am now hitting the ball with a carry of 175 - 200 yards! I hit my 7 iron about 130 yrds. I am not convinced the problem is the club, I think it is the power I generate through the swing. I regularly shot in the low 80's, consistently straight (with a little draw at times).

My distance throughout my clubs puts me at a disadvantage as I am always playing a mid/long iron into the par fours. Though 9/10 hit the green if I was on a high iron I would be making far more birdies/pars!

Any advice on building power in my swing would be appreciated, maybe I am swaying my hips rather than turning? My shoulder turn is full but I feel no tension/coil at the top. No matter how hard I try and hit the ball on the way down I get the same distance!

I know my setup is very good and not effecting my distance.

    Any ideas gratefully received!

I think i have the answer. First look at where your swing finishes because it sounds to me that you are decelerating at impact. always make sure you complete your swing to a full and balanced finish. hope this helps...T.P.Grealey.

Thanks - definitely worth looking at. My tempo is always slow and smooth and I get a full finish but a few people have suggested I get "lazy" through the ball.

Is your ball flight too high??

generally it is high through all clubs but even when I get a lower trajectory my drives are short.

my guess is that your are a consistent swatter. In other words you are able to square the the club up with your arms and hands but are losing the rotational forces of the hips and shoulders. check out Greg Willis right hand drill.

I can find it - any idea where I can find the drill? Can you explain the term swatter - I have never heard it before!

              Thanks

Thanks - all is now clear. My hands are always laid off in setup so this may provide useful. I will see how it goes down the range....

This is a problem that i used to have. the right hand drill does help but also look at maybe making your tempo a bit faster. a slow tempo is good but sometimes can cause you deaccelerating into the ball losing valuable yards

                      Thanks.

The only drill I have is to hold the club at the head end of the shaft and swing trying to get the soshing noise as loud as possible through the impact point.

I'm also working on a full balanaced finish to ensure smooth tempo and hopefully help hitting through the ball rather than at it.

I would appreciate any other drills people might have to help increase aceleration through impact......any ideas?

Re: Can't get past 200 yrds!

                        J,

I agree with the above - acceleration through the ball is crucial. Swing at a speed through the ball that allows you to finish balanced. But remember don't be too quick in the first movement of the downswing!!!!

I'm working on letting the wrists release at the top of my back swing. A valued friend and fellow golfer (3 h'cap) brought this to my attention. He said I was quite rigid at the top. Apart from the extra distance this change has improved my tempo and finish.

I'm now hitting my 5 iron 140m on the fly (in winter). I'm impressed.

This wrist suggestion was also raised by pnearn in the last week or so.

be very careful about early wrist release from top of backswing as this can cuase you to cast from the top.
try to retain your agles until your hands reach roughly waist height and then release through the ball causing a nice audible swish.

                          regards .....Terry

yeah, trying to increase your swing speed can often lead to swinging from the top, thus releasing all clubhead speed way before the ball.
Yours arms etc will look like they are swinging fast, but in reality the clubhead (i.e. the bit that hits the ball) will be much slower.
I have been practicing with a very slow tempo lately, same back as follow through and Im hitting a 6i 160m.
If I try to speed up (incorrectly) it drops back to about 140m.
as long as you are accelerating through impact, thats all you need for a consistent hit.
