  • need the draw

Hi i have a Cleveland Ti 460, 10.5 loft, regular flex and torque 3.7. This club goes a long way. Off a 10.5 handicap I regularly hit it 300 yards. The problem is I always have a fade and on the odd occasion when trying to rip it a "slice" (aagghh). Could someone please tell me if there is a link to a lesson on how to draw or could someone please tell me. The fade i would like to keep in my armoury so its there for a left to right hole but i am suffering on right to lefts.
    Cheers keith

    Hi keith.

I assume you are right handed.

    Try this drill.
Take your normal set up , now drop your right foot back so that the toes of your right foot are just behind the line of the heel of your left foot, feet shoulder width apart .
This will promote a in-to-square-to-in swing path. Also check to your backswing is on plane ( if it's too flat it will cause you to come over the top on your downswing which will cause you to cut across the ball and result in a slice) . Be patient with this drill and you will see big improvements.

Regards from a fellow RED ( Manchester United to all you yanks ).......Terry

Sorry yes i am right handed. Cheers fellow red , if this works then when i set up normally do i aim the set up down the right hand side of the fairway. I have never dared aim to the right side of the fairway .

        Hi Kieth
The drill is only to promote a feeling for the correct swing path. when you are on the course take your normal set up and swing.

If you start to slice on the tee, then use the tee box to your advantage.
Tee up on the far right of the tee box and aim for the left of the fairway, then if you do slice , you are giving yourself every chance to land the ball on the fairway.......Terry

Yes cheers I do that already and it does fade into the centre of the fairway (most times), what I would like is to set it off down the middle to right, bringing it back around the corner of a right to left dog leg.
I understand the drill, will it work on the tee box aiming slightly right ?

            Re: need the draw

It wouldn't hurt to try it . Take your normal setup , clubface pointing to target and just close your stance a little. This will promote the same swing path as the drilll. Regards Terry

              Hi Man Utd fan,

Just do everything normal but just close your stance so you are aiming right with your feet.

                Re: need the draw

you hit it 300 and you have a reg flex shaft, not a good combination, when you swing harder your shaft is keeping the clubhead open

                my guess anyways

when i hit my big hooking draw for hole 13 at my course i close the club face and when i swing down its almost like a feeling of falling backwards

                  Re: need the draw

Thanks people, will try it out. Two things that might work against it, friends have said I have a slightly weak right hand grip and my shoulder turn is too quick leaving the club face open? (they think i am facing the target before ball impact) which I am tempted not to believe as much.
my digi camera takes video, will have to get someone to video me and I can post it for analysys.

                      Re: need the draw

...explain the shoulder turn too quick thing...

If you are turning your shoulders BEFORE your hips on the downswing, OR, you are turning your shoulder even with your hips on teh downswing, you will fade or slice it.

Ground up to start the downswing. Create seperation between your hips and shoulders.

I agree with what was posted above...hitting it 300 with a regular shaft...The clubhead will hang open with a higher swing speed.

                        shoulder turn to quick.
I have been told that my shoulders are leading the downswing and turning towards the target before my hips. ie my upper body is through quicker than my lower body. apparantly a lot
I think I should slow the tempo but I loose 40 yards and still fade
                        cheers keith

                          hi mate.
Try keeping your back to the target for as long as possible when you start your downswing. This cured my slice.

                          Regards....Terry

                            Re: need the draw

I'll give my same boring response, aim for the inside quarter of the ball . If you are hitting a fade, this means your stance is slightly open and your club head is traveling along your stance line so that is slightly outside to inside the target line. The clubhead is slightly open. To hit straight or a draw you need to adjust your stance so that you come into the ball from the inside. Set your stance square or slightly closed to to the target line. Draw a circle around the center of the ball and put an x on one side of the circle. Put the ball on the tee with the circle in the same direction as the target line and with the x towards you. Keep your eye on the x and hit it.

                              Re: need the draw

To simply put it, where your shoulders are pointing at impact is where the ball is going to start out. Thats why an over the top path produces a slice or a fade.

You need to create as big as possible seperation between your hips and shoulders. Like said above, keep your back to the ball for as long as possible.

Also, a bigger shoulder turn WITH LESS hip turn helps. This creates the seperation.

When I hit pretty draws with all clubs, including the driver, my swing speed feels slow. However, I seem to hit the ball just as far.

I always say start with the low irons and make 70% swings. Work on coming from the inside and keeping those shoulders back. Imagine the path the ball in going to start out on. THATS where you want your shoulders to be at impact. Your hips should be open, but your shoulders CLOSED.
