hi guys
i find it so strange so many of you hate the 1 iron, do you think it might be a mind thing, sort of like it a hard club to play so i wont do it, i really dont find it hard to use at all, i use it maybe 2/3 times a round, more if very windy, i dont do anything diffrent in hitting it, only think about hitting it clean.
i have used it maybe 14/15 years now and its still that old ping eye, have thought of getting a hybrid but not got round to trying one yet.
it was lee trevino the said even god cant hit a 1 iron and then he was hit twice by lightening, once a tree he was under was hit killing one of his playing partners and fusing his spine. another time a tree near him as he was leaving the fairway knocking him off his feet. so dont stand under a tree or next to your clubs.

Well ill be honest, ive never tried a 1 iron or 2 iron. I dont like rescue woods either they are so ugly I just cant use them! So I just have 3 iron and 3 wood and I need a club to fit inbetween those!

Look im gona try one ok! Please dont have a go at me if I start ripping it 220 yards and go agaisnt everything I have said lol!

I would encourage you to get a driver and persist wiyh it rather than a 1 iron. Carrying a 1 iron in your bag could be a bad move. Unless you can hit a 2 iron really well I would give serious thought to this.

I just have 3 iron and 3 wood and I need a club to fit inbetween those!

i droped my 2 iron to make way for gap-wedge and lob-wedge and have driver and 1 iron as my long clubs, mid clubs 4,5,6 irons, have been thinking about getting a 20% hybrid to replace the 3 iron, but i wont drop the 1 iron when it works for me.
your in ireland so must have same weather as i do and same types of courses so it must be really windy too if your near the coast, dont you think a club that hits the ball low with tons of run would be i good club in your bag if you could use it.

Hi Bill,

I can understand why you need low lofted clubs to get under the wind in Scotland.

The longest iron I carry is a 5, I use a 7 / 5 / 3 wood / driver and I carry 4 wedges. This generally suits my game but there are those occasions where I need a long low shot under the wind or trees that make me compromise with my driver or 3 wood off the fairway, this is where I miss a longer iron, especially if the lie of the ball is not too good.

i do think a 1 iron is a good tool for a certin job and thats a low running shot and i have never found it harder to use than any other club. i dont do silly things like try and hit it out a diviot or rough. most times its off a tee but if a good lie on fairway i'll use it. i hit my drives high with a fade and if it windy i find it hard to hit a low fade and due to damage to my back i cant hit a draw anymore without tweeking my back. i seem to twist lot more hitting a draw.

Rob, I do have a driver lol! Its just i am looking for a club to go inbetween the 3 iron and 3 wood.

I dont like 5 woods!

I picked up a used 16 degree hybrid for $30.00 which might fit the bill. I also had that gap and this seem to fill it.

Another problem I have is that I have 4 wedges so there isnt no space for another club at the moment!

I understand, however, you may not need a 60 degree for all courses and can substitute a hybrid for this depending on the course and conditions and greens etc.

I dont really like 60* so yeah I think ill take that out. I hardly ever use it, I find it just as easy to open up a s wedge and do a flop shot.

I will have to try a 2 iron see how it goes :-s!

The enthusiastic response to the hybrids
has again caused the 1-iron to fall under
the scrutiny of students of the game.
Some have gone so far as to drop irons
as low as the five and six.
I think people will come to find the
difference in yardage between the
standard five and six does not
necessarily translate to the hybrids.
That is, the distances are not as
easily controlled with the hybrids.
I'm keeping my Ping Eye-2 one iron.

The best way to hit a 1 iron is on the side of your shed or maybe against a big rock if you've got one in your backyard. I can hit a 1 iron around 210 - 220 but it's a hard club to hit and I can't count on accuracy with it. I hit my 3 wood around the same distance with incredible accuracy so I never use a 1 iron. So, just to recap, hit it against a rock or something else of similar hardness and mangle it so you won't be tempted to try it. LOL. Better yet, give it back to your buddy for a round and make him use it to "show you the proper technique for hitting the 1 iron".
