  • help me decide...

how to gain in driver distance and accuracy......(everyone's dream I know....)

I have an 8.5deg stiff shaft driver and a 9.5deg reg shaft driver. Both are of the same make and type head . Everything else being equal, I am thinking of cutting the reg shaft down 1 to 2 inches to help me achieve a longer, straighter drive. Is this reasonable? Thanks...

    hi opfoto
i cant give you technical advice im sure lowpost will chime in and give you the lowdown.
my advice would be to trade them both in for a 10.5 deg driver.
i could never hit with any distance or accuracy until i got a higher loft driver ive had it a couple of months and am now regularly hitting 260yd straight drives.
    hope this helps

LowPost42 is probably the person who needs to comment on this but I have a couple of thoughts.

Firstly, it depends on your swing; how fast you swing and how consistantly you hit the sweetspot on the club face. If you consistently hit the sweetspot anyway, then shorteding the shaft will only lose you distance.

Secondly, what sort of flight do you have from your driver? If you have a bad slice it may be cause by an in to out swing path which would not necessarily be cured by a shortened shaft.

Straighter driving can be achieved by increased loft or using a shorter shaft. Using a shaft with the wrong flex, either too soft or too stiff, tends to exacerbate swing faults such as an in to out swing path.

If you are having problems with errant driving, even with your higher lofter driver then using a shorter shaft should make it easier to hit the center of the club face and produce more distance, so yes it is reasonable but with provisos.

As an aside, your two drivers do not seem to be set up for the same player. One might expect a player with an average to good swing speed to have a 9.5 degree with a stiff shaft or a 8.5 with a regular shaft. A driver with 8.5 degree loft and a stiff shaft is much more suited to a very fast swing (with modern low spinning balls, even Tiger player with a 9.5 degree driver).
