  • How to tell if you are hitting the sweetspot

This was mentioned on another thread somewhere but I tried it last night up the driving range and it works a treat. I have been driving the ball pretty well recently so assumed my impact position must be pretty close to the centre of the clubface so, when I saw the tip about wiping some spit on the clubface so hat you could see where the ball had actually struck the face - I was surprised to see the resulting ballmark half an inch or even more, towards the heel - the ball still flew relatively staright and far BTW

So insted of lining the clubhead up with the ball directly in the middle of the clubhead, I moved back half an inch so that I was more lined up with the toe end of the club - the result was that the drives literally exploded of the face and the ballmark was smack on in the centre, the drives went a good 20yds further.

So - give it a try, wipe some spit across the clubface with your thumb before driving, and see where your ballmark is - you may be surprised like me!

I use Mizuno MP32 blades and you can feel if its not hit on the hotspot, it feels very different, i would say it almost feels like you havent hit the ball when it connects with the sweetspot. Oh and the obvious clues are that it falls about 20 yards short of where it chould be! I suppose it is more difficult to tell with the cavity backs.

Don't know about other clubs - I only tested it with the driver

i've been doing that ever since i started playing golf. but i really only did it to clean the clubface... the resulting ball mark that was left was like a by product and it helps you line up your drives so you know if your too close to the ball or too far away.... and if something goes wrong you can generally tell why.

not so much with irons, but sometimes it leaves a mark.

my new irons are so forgiving - Taylormade RAC OS2 - if i hit the outside of the club the ball will still travel straight, feel harder through the club but remains straight. i'm loving these, only had them 2 weeks

I have found that you line the club face with the ball near the toe. This is with the head on the ground behind the ball. Now raise the club straight up and the ball will be in the middle of the club face.
