  • no more drivers?

    hi all
im in need of some help!
how can it be that i can hit all my clubs sweetly barring my driver?
i have just had a shaft fitted to my driver based on my swing speed etc
and i still cant hit a draw or a straight shot!
today i hit irons, rescues and 3wood great then it comes to driver and its pull slice, straight slice and just for good measure push slice!
at the end i used a strong grip, closed stance and nice easy swing and still sliced

When you ease off, does it slice more or less than when you swing normally?

You need to adapt to the longer shaft or get it cut. Remember if you get it cut down, make sure they adjust swing weight also.
If you are average height and using a 45+" shaft, you are in the vast minority including the pro's. Even tiger uses a 43+" shaft so what makes you think you can use anything longer.
        Just a thought.

Why not reshaft your driver the exact same way as your 3-wood, but add a little bit of tip weight (7-8grams).

This would give you a low loft 3-wood. And logic would say that this should just launch lower than your 3-wood.

Don't increase the tip weight and you get a lighter (lower SW = marginally higher swing speed), lower loft 3w, and the shaft will actually play stiffer than a 3w so IMO it would be more consistent.

But this all depends on if it is the driver, or the driver of the driver.

I'm currently investigating something, and is the reason why I asked.

I re-headed a shaft for a fellow, and he started fighting a slice. I mean a wild, wicked slice. The more he stepped on it, the worse the slice became. When he backed off, he hit some straight balls. Oddly enough, the shaft was playing weaker in the new head (due to an increased BBGM).

I put a new driver out into play. I was slicing it a little bit. When I eased off, it sliced a LOT.

Now, what do I think I was seeing here? I think I was seeing the effect of having the wrong flex shaft. My buddy needed it stiffer, and slowed his swing to sort it out, while I needed something a little softer. By having something too stout for me, I had to really go after it in an attempt to keep it straight.

Now, which way is it for you? I can't say for certain. Since you were swinging easy, I'd swinging faster. Not harder, just faster. See what happens. Change flex accordingly.

                  Ian,
Forget the adjustments and shaft cutting etc. If you are striking all other clubs sweet, then I am adamant that you are not employing the same swing with your driver. Also, what loft is your driver? 10,5, even 12, is what you should be using. The more you fight with this problem, you will not correct it. Go to a pro and let him compare your iron and 3 wood swing to your driver swing. Having looked at your swing and speed, I would think that a regular shaft is not suitable for you. A stiff shaft should be more suitable. Come on Ian, get the head right!!!!!

                    Re: no more drivers?

There is one other thing I may look to, slats.

I have abandoned fairway woods for this very reason.

I have a good 'iron' swing. Certainly steep enough, get great compression, and take good divots.

I have an issue where I use this swing with my driver. However, the driver does not respond well to a steep swing. When I hit driver (well), I remind myself to flatten out my swing.

                    Just another thought.

                      hi rob
i was slicing with a stiff shaft so the club maker put me the same shaft in my driver as in my irons and im still slicing!
trying to straighten out my driver swing is doing my head in and statrs to screw up the rest of my game.
will book a lesson with pro this week and see what he thinks

                        hi mate
you may have a point there!
i have my set up with other clubs spot on it just comes naturally but when it comes to driver im all at sea.
hopefully pro will put me right about ball position ,swing plane etc.
got to be swing if i cant hit straight with stiff or reg shaft!
