Ok, I'm sure there have been similar posts by others, but maybe someone can help me as I can't find anything exactly like my situation. I have a 3 & 5 wood, which I can hit really very consistently, not that long (5 wood 190, 3 wood 210) but mainly straight. I recently bought a new driver of similar shaft flex to these clubs to try and get a bit of extra distance off the tee. Strangely I can't seem to hit it at all! What happens 80% of the time is that I manufacture some kind of low rat-hook that doesn't go very far. I'm now deliberately trying to swing it just as I do with my 3 & 5 wood, but this doesn't help. Any suggestions? I play off 22.

Personally, I think the driver needs to be set up so the ball is much farther forward and tee'd much higher than other woods, you'd be surprised. The 3 and 5 W are not as deep as a modern driver face so you tend to tee them much lower and inside your left foot at most. Also with a Driver you want to strike the ball a touch on the upswing. This takes a bit of the spin off the ball and launches it in the right direction -- up!
I'd try moving the tee position a couple of inches at a time and each time check the clubface for ball marks (you can see very faint dimple pattern if you rub the surface with a spit-moistened thumb prior to each hit). Once you're hitting the centre of the face you've moved it far enough. Keep VERY close attention to where you position the tee and do this EXACTLY the same each time. With a bit of patience you'll find he driver is the easiest club to hit in your bag I guarantee it. Don't be afraid to experiment a bit. You might be surprised at where you need to position the ball! -
